George Mason Live Video Following consecutive Atlantic 10 wins last weekend, the Fordham men's soccer team is on the road this weekend in Virginia for a pair of conference matches. The Rams are at VCU on Friday night, while taking on George Mason on Sunday.
Just three games into conference play, Fordham is tied for the top spot with Rhode Island with six points, but the Atlantic 10 standings are very tight with every match taking on great significance.
The Rams (5-6-1 2-1-0) look to extend their win streak to three games at VCU on Friday. VCU is 4-7-2 overall with a 1-0-1 record in conference play. VCU's conference win was a big one two weeks ago, as they knocked off then-#20 George Mason, 3-0, at Sports Backers Stadium. The team then played to a 1-1 draw with Massachusetts up in Amherst.
Fordham and VCU have met just twice previously. In 2012, the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in the Bronx, while last year, VCU won the match, 3-0, down in Richmond.
On Sunday, Fordham will meet George Mason, who is receiving votes for the NSCAA top 25 poll. This is the first meeting between the teams as members of the Atlantic 10. The only other meeting came in 1996, a 5-0 win by George Mason, at the Hofstra Invitational in Hempstead, N.Y.
The Patriots are 8-2-3 on the year with a 1-1-1 in the conference. The match will features two of the top scorers in the league in Fordham's
Andres Penfold and George Mason's Timi Mulgrew. Penfold has seven goals and 16 points this season, while Mulgrew has nine goals and 20 points. Both players have also come up with the clutch goal, as they are among the national leaders in game-winning goals with four each.
