Swimming & Diving Sweeps Meet at Iona

Women Defeat Gaels 144-77, While Men Grab 136-88 Victory

The Fordham swimming & diving teams were back in action for the first time in the new year on Friday afternoon, as the Rams traveled to New Rochelle for a dual meet at Iona.  The Rams made their first outing of 2014 a good one, sweeping the meet 144-77 on the women's side and 136-88 on the men's side.
 
The meet began with the one-meter diving event, where Fordham took first in both competitions.  Claire Parker won the women's one-meter dive with a score of 198.08, while Kevin Jimenez-Cowell won the men's event with a score of 189.23.
 
Next was the 400 medley relay, where Fordham came out with two wins.  The women's team of Jordan Tomimatsu, Megan Polaha, Shannon Jones, and Shannon Lulley took first in 4:07.10, while the men's group of Miguel Mattox, Ben Dwyer, Shintaro Noguchi, and Pat Millitti won in a time of 3:36.76.
 
In the 1000 freestyle, it was a pair of Fordham freshmen that touched the pad first, as Natalie Malicki won in 10:49.30, while Chris Indudhara posted a winning time of 10:05.26.
 
The 200 freestyle event also saw a Fordham sweep with Kara Field (1:57.66) and Steve Sholdra (1:45.34) taking home the top spot.
 
In the 50 freestyle, Shintaro Noguchi won the event for Fordham in 21.37 seconds, while Kelly Carroll was just touched out by .04 seconds for first place, as she clocked in second in 25.79 seconds.  The 200 individual medley was the next event, where Theresa Goehring grabbed first for Fordham in 2:12.88 with Brandon Strong finishing second in the men's event in 2:02.66.

The meet then turned back over to diving for the three-meter event.  Parker earned her second win of the day with a score of 192.74 with Hanul Moon taking first in the men's event with a score of 189.07.
 
Back in the swimming events, the Rams swept the next three events in the 200 butterfly, 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke.  First in the butterfly, it was Kalena Laurent (2:06.38) and Noguchi (1:57.66) taking first, while in the 100 freestyle, it was Megan Gray (54.53) and Nick Belfanti (50.39) grabbing the top spot.  In the 200 backstroke, Megan Zarriello (2:12.79) and Michael Grimmett-Norris (2:00.84) placed first for Fordham.
 
Malicki continued Fordham's winning ways, as she captured her second event of the day in the 500 freestyle in 5:12.66.
 
Fordham's final individual wins came in the 200 breaststroke, where Anna Marshall (2:27.30) and Sholdra (2:13.55) took the top spot.
 
In the final event of the meet, Fordham won the women's 400 freestyle relay, as Chandler Lulley, Gray, Field, and Shannon Lulley posted a time of 3:37.15.
 
The Rams are back in action on Sunday, January 19th, as the Rams take on La Salle and Richmond in a tri-meet in Philadelphia.
