BRONX, N.Y. -
Michele Daubman may have started her day in the circle, but her heroics at the plate proved even more vital in Fordham's 5-4 win over Saint Joseph's on Friday. The sophomore smacked a two-run single in the third and hit a solo home run in the sixth, lifting the Rams to a 5-4 victory over the Hawks in game one of a crucial two game series.
Daubman was one of two Rams to record multiple hits on the day, as Chelsea Palumbo went 2-2 at the dish.
Patti Maloney picked up the win for the Rams, relieving Daubman in the fourth and allowing no hits and walking only one in three and two-thirds innings of work. With a performance that was nothing short of spectacular, the freshman dropped her ERA to 3.33 and registered her third victory of the season.
The first inning of play gave indications that Friday's game might turn into a pitchers' duel, as both Daubman and Taryn Ashway of Saint Joe's retired the opposition in order.
The Hawks got to Daubman in the second, as a pair of doubles drove in two runs and Saint Joe's jumped out to 2-0 lead.
The Rams threatened in the bottom of the second, as Gabby Luety and Brianna Turgeon started off the inning with back-to-back singles, giving Fordham runners on first and third with nobody out. Fordham, however, failed to push a run across, keeping the Saint Joe's lead at two.
Daubman made quick work of the Hawks in the top of the third and the Rams struck in the bottom half of the frame.
Palumbo and Jamie LaBovick singled to start the inning and Elise Fortier drove in Palumbo with a single down the line. After Luety was hit by a pitch and Turgeon reached on a fielder's choice that caught a runner at home, Kayla Lombardo singled home a run with a poke to leftfield. Then, Daubman came to the plate and singled up the middle, scoring two runs on the play.
After the dust settled, the Rams had pushed across four in the inning, taking a two run lead on the Hawks.
Saint Joe's answered right back in the top half of the fourth, posting two runs to tie the game at four. Maloney entered the game with one out in that frame, and the first batter she faced lined into a double play made possible by the quick thinking of Turgeon at second base.
Both teams went hitless in the fifth and Maloney retired the Hawks in order in the top of the sixth.
Then, Daubman led off the top sixth in stellar fashion. The Saint Joe's pitcher, Liz Mendez, gave her a pitch on the inside half of the plate and Daubman made great contact, sending a shot over the left-centerfield wall and putting the Rams up by one.
Maloney turned in another flawless performance in the top of the seventh, as the Hawks went three up, three down to end the game.
The Rams still have plenty of softball remaining this weekend, taking on the Hawks in a noon tilt tomorrow before heading to Philadelphia for a doubleheader against Temple on Sunday.
