Amherst, Mass. - Following Tuesday night's big effort against Manhattan, the Fordham baseball team continued its scoring ways on Friday, taking advantage of a number of errors and netting a 12-5 victory over the Massachusetts Minutemen at Earl Lorden Field in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Fordham (17-30, 3-13) struck first in a big way to open the game. After a pair of outs, Mike Mauri, Charles Galiano, and Sam Careccia were all walked to load the bases. David Judisky then crushed a ball to deep left center for a grand slam home run, his second home run of the season.

The Rams added to the lead in the fourth, as Brendan Maghini singled, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a double by Ian Edmiston, his team-leading eighth of the season.

UMass got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, but Fordham took that run back in the seventh for a 6-1 lead. After Mauri reached on an error and stole second, Ryan Phelan ripped a double to left center just over the leftfielder's head, scoring Mauri from second.

David Judisky's grand slam home run in the first set the tone for the day

Fordham starter Joseph Charest was in control over the first seven innings, but got into some trouble in the eighth. The Minutemen rallied with four runs in the eighth to pull within one, 6-5. UMass got RBI-singles by Kellen Pagel and John Jennings, a bases loaded walk to Vinny Scifo, and a passed ball to score the four runs. The Rams though would get out of the inning with the lead as reliever Rich Anastasi got a pair of pop ups to end the threat.

Fordham then responded with a six-run rally in the ninth to go ahead by a 12-5 count. The Rams took advantage of three Minutemen errors in the inning, scoring four of the six runs on those errors. Fordham also picked up runs on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Mauri.

Reliever J.C. Porter pitched a clean ninth inning to secure the win for Charest, his second of the year. Charest went the first 7.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.

At the plate, Judisky's grand slam home run highlighted the day, while Maghini was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Joseph Runco also had a pair of hits and a stolen base in the game, extending his season-long hit streak to six games, with Mauri and Careccia each recording two runs scored and a stolen base.

The same two teams match up on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
