Bronx, N.Y. -
For the second straight game, the Fordham University baseball squad scored four times in the ninth. But unlike the previous game where the four runs sent the game to extra innings where the Rams won, tonight the four runs were one shy of what the squad needed as the Rams fell to the University of Richmond, 9-8, in an Atlantic 10 game at Houlihan Park.
With the loss, the Rams see their four-game winning streak snapped as Fordham falls to 19-31 overall, 5-14 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond improves to 29-18 overall, 12-7 in the conference.
The Fordham ninth started with pinch hitter Rob McCunney singling through the left side. Pinch hitter Ryan Phelan then hit a ground ball to short but Spider shortstop Mike Small's throw to second pulled the second baseman off the bag. Joseph Runco then delivered McCunney with a single to left center with Phelan taking second. After both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, Ian Edmiston struck out for the first out of the inning. Mike Mauri followed with a ground ball to short but Small had trouble getting the ball out of his glove which allowed Phelan to score and Runco to move to third. After Charles Galiano was hit by a pitch to load the bases, David Judisky fanned for the second out of the frame. Ryan Lee then plated Runco and Mauri with a line single to right center to make it a one-run game, 9-8. But that was as close as the Rams would get as Brendan Maghini skied out to right to end the game with runners on the corners.
The Spiders took a quick 1-0 lead when Matt Zink led off the game with his first home run of the year and Richmond made it a 2-0 game on a Nick Poulos RBI triple in the second.
The Rams halved the deficit in the third as Sam Careccia led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Joseph DeVito. After Runco moved Careccia to third on a ground out, Edmiston brought him in with a single.
Fordham then tied the game at two in the home half of the fourth when Galiano singled to open the inning, moved to second on a Dan Sorine sacrifice bunt and came in to score on a Lee double. The Rams would load the bases with one out in the inning but Richmond starter Jonathan de Marte got DeVito to ground into a 5-4-3 double play.
The tie was short-lived as Richmond took the lead for good with a three-run fifth, highlighted by a two-run double from Bret Williams.
Fordham got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth as Runco led off with a single and moved to second when Edmiston walked. The runners moved up on a Mauri sacrifice with Runco coming in to score later in the inning on a passed ball and Edmiston touching the plate when Judisky reached on an error.
The Spiders got the two runs back on a pair of solo home runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 7-4 game and then increased the advantage to 9-4 with two more in the eighth.
Lee, who was playing for the first time since suffering an injury on March 10, was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI while Runco and Edmiston also collected a pair of hits with each driving in a run.
The two teams continue their three-game series on Saturday at 4:00 PM at Houlihan Park.
