Freshman hurler Tori Free had a career day for St. John's, fanning 14 batters in her team's 3-0 win over Fordham in Queens on Tuesday afternoon.
The Rams fell to 30-18 on the year with the loss in their final non-conference game of the year. The Red Storm improved to 15-34-1 with the victory.
Fordham's offense showed some life in the top of the first, as three separate Rams reached base. Fordham, however, left a runner in scoring position and failed to push a run across.
Taylor Pirone entered the circle in the bottom of the first for Fordham, allowing a leadoff hit but working her way out of trouble with three straight outs.
The second inning featured nothing but stellar pitching from both squads, as Free retired the Rams without a hit before Pirone sent the Red Storm packing in order.
The third frame was much of the same, as Elise Fortier recorded the inning's only hit and the two teams entered the fourth in a scoreless tie.
Free continued to impress in the fourth, recording her eighth and ninth strikeouts of the game to retire the Rams in order.
St. John's finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on five hits in the frame. The Rams' defense did a commendable job holding Red Storm runners; however, as all five of those hits were restricted to one-baggers.
A Gabby Luety walk and a Kayla Lombardo single gave the Rams' base runners in the top of the sixth and double steal moved those two to second and third with two outs. Free, however, recorded her 12th strikeout of the afternoon on the next pitch, as St. John's exited the frame unharmed.
Free held the Rams scoreless in the seventh, securing the 3-0 victory.
The Rams have one weekend remaining in A-10 play, as they kick off a two game series with Saint Joseph's on Friday at Bahoshy Field. First pitch on Friday is slated for 3 PM.
