Bronx, N.Y. -

The Fordham defense put in a lot of hard work this spring and it showed at tonight's Spring Game on Jack Coffey Field as the unit had the offense off balance for most of the night, allowing just two touchdowns and two field goals. DeAndre Slate paced the defense with five total tackles, including 3.5 sacks while Brett Biestek also notched four stops, including one for loss.

The offense was playing without quarterback Michael Nebrich, who is recovering from an injury from last season and the unit only had five healthy linemen, who were forced to play the entire scrimmage, minus the seven-on-seven sessions. Despite the missing members, the offense still had some bright spots as Peter Maetzold completed 17 of 25 passes for 178 yards while Phazahn Odom hauled in a game-high six passes for 83 yards.

"I thought the defense played lights out tonight," said head coach Joe Moorhead. "The defense did a great job at making improvements this spring and it really showed tonight. If the offense comes around and gets healthy like I expect, we can be a very good team in the fall."

The scrimmage started with the offense trapped on its own one and looking for a first down which the offense managed to do, the first series on a pass from Maetzold to Sam Ajala and the second on a pass from Griffin Murphy to Odom.

The offense then started on its own 35 and was able to move the ball across midfield but a fourth down pass attempt on the defense's 35 was incomplete as Stephen Hodge was able to break it up.

Later in the session, the offense moved down to the defense's five, thanks in part to a third down pass interference penalty. Three Andrew Erenberg rushes picked up just three yards and Michael Marando came on to boot an 18-yard field goal for the first points of the game.

Two series later, the defense would have gotten on the board as Jake Rodrigues stepped in front of a Maetzold pass at midfield and returned it to the end zone, but the officials blew the play dead prior to Rodrigues getting to the end zone.

The defense fed off of the interception, shutting down the offense on the next two series, forcing a three-and-out on the first and forcing a third down incompletion at midfield on the second.

To give the offensive line a breather, Moorhead called for a seven-on-seven drill where Nick Glogau came on to complete five of eight passes, including a 40-yard touchdown pass to Tony Patrignelli.

The full offensive unit returned to the field for the next series, starting on its own 45. The first two series resulted in three-and-outs but on the third, Maetzold brought the offense down to the defense's 19 where Marando connected on a 36-yard field goal.

Murphy then moved the offense to the defense's 35 where a fourth down pass fell incomplete.

After another seven-on-seven session, the scrimmage moved to a red zone situation where the offense started on the defense's 25. The first unit got the ball down to the one, thanks to a 20-yard completion from Maetzold to Brian Wetzel, but the defense came up big on fourth and goal from the one, keeping Carlton Koonce out of the end zone.

The offense broke the plane on the next series as Maetzold found Odom with a six-yard gain on third down to give the offense a first and goal from the one where Crayton took it in on the next play.

The touchdown seem to awaken Slate, who recorded two sacks on the next series but Glogau closed out the game with a one-yard scoring run for the offense.

Patrignelli finished with five catches for 80 yards while Marco Fragnito had five receptions for 51 yards and Wetzel hauled in four passes for 58 yards.

Defensively, Brett Biestek and David Barletta each notched three tackles, with one of Biestek's being for loss.
