After a thrilling affair that saw the Rams emerge with a 4-3 victory on Friday afternoon, Saint Louis came out on top in a close one on Saturday, besting the Rams 2-1 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.
Pitching dominated early in Saturday's affair, as freshman Patti Maloney and her counterpart Brianna Lore tore through the opposing lineups. Each held the other's squad scoreless through the first four frames.
Saint Louis finally broke through in the home half of the fifth, as Elizabeth Everingham smacked a home run to right center, giving the Billikens a 1-0 lead.
But the resilient Rams responded in a big way in the top of the sixth. Jamie LaBovick singled up the middle, extending her school record hitting streak to 26 games.
Elise Fortier, arguably the Rams' most feared hitter, stepped up next to the plate and the Coventry, R.I., native doubled to right field, scoring LaBovick and tying the game at one.
Michele Daubman took the circle to start the sixth, retiring the Billikens while allowing only one baserunner.
Tied at one entering the seventh, a pair of walks allowed two Rams to reach base in the top half of the inning, but Fordham failed to push a run across.
A leadoff single followed by a walk gave the Billikens two runners on to start the inning, and an RBI single up the middle by Erin Harcar ended the contest, sealing a 2-1 victory for the Billikens.
The Rams will be back in action tomorrow, as they head to Indianapolis to take on Butler in a doubleheader starting at noon.
