Bronx, N.Y. -
The Fordham baseball team got a strong eight innings from Chris Pike, while Sam Careccia had his first career three-hit game, but it wasn't enough as Rhode Island got a three-run home run from Mike LeBel to defeat Fordham, 4-3, at Houlihan Park for the second straight day.
The loss puts Fordham at 12-22 on the year, 1-7 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island evened its record at 17-17 overall, 5-3 in the league.
After honoring the 1993 Patriot League and ECAC Champion Fordham baseball team, the current Fordham Rams got off to a good start in the first inning, scoring twice for a 2-0 lead. Joseph Runco started the rally with a one-out single to right, which was followed by an RBI-double to center from Dan Sorine. After a wild pitch and a walk, Ian Edmiston singled home Sorine from third.
Rhode Island cut the deficit in half in the top of the third, when Jeff Roy led off with a ground rule double and scored on a single by Tim Caputo.
The score remained at 2-1 until the fifth, when Rhode Island's Mike LeBel hit a three-run home run to left, his second of the season, to give URI a 4-2 edge.
Fordham cut into the lead in the bottom of the eighth, as Mike Mauri walked, moved to second on a ground out, and scored on a double down the left field line by Sam Careccia, which was his third hit of the day.
Fordham couldn't tie the game in that inning, nor in the ninth, as URI's Bobby Dean struck out the final four batters he faced.
Fordham starter Chris Pike (1-6) was the hard luck loser, allowing four runs on nine hits over eight innings of work with four strikeouts. Rich Anastasi, who was honored before the game for becoming the Rams' career appearances leader, pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
At the plate, Careccia was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Fordham, while Sorine was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
The same two teams will close out their Atlantic 10 series on Sunday with a noon game.
