Merion Station, Pa. -
The Saint Joseph's pitching staff was again in charge on Friday, posting 11 strikeouts and holding Fordham to two runs on five hits, as the Hawks won game two of the Atlantic 10 series from the Rams, 6-2, at Smithson Field in Merion Station, Pennsylvania.
Fordham (10-14, 0-5) got off to a good start, scoring twice in the first inning. Joseph Runco reached base on an error to start the inning and moved to second on a bunt single by Tim Swatek. After a sacrifice bunt, Charles Galiano ripped a single off the third baseman, allowing two runs to score for the early lead.
The score remained at 2-0 until the third, when the Hawks notched three runs for a 3-2 edge. Saint Joseph's loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, and scored their first run on a wild pitch. Chris Hueth then drove in two runs on an infield single to shortstop.
The Hawks copied that effort in the fourth, extending the lead to 6-2. Saint Joseph's again loaded the bases and got an RBI-single by Stefan Kancylarz and a two-run double by Brian O'Keefe to score their runs.
The Rams were unable to mount much against the Hawks, getting only one hit, a triple by Mike Mauri, over the final five innings. The Hawks' pitching trio of Kyle Mullen, Steven Schuler, and Jimmy Yacabonis totaled 11 strikeouts, with Mullen earning his fourth win of the year.
Fordham starter Chris Pike fell to 1-4 on the year, allowing three earned runs on five hits with four walks. Reliever Jimmy Murphy made his first appearance, following an injury that kept him out since the first weekend of the season. Murphy pitched three scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits with two strikeouts.
The two teams conclude the series on Saturday with a noon game.
