Baseball Drops A-10 Series Opener at Saint Joseph's

Merion Station, Pa. - Saint Joseph's Jordan Carter tossed a complete game, six-hitter with eight strikeouts, while Brian O'Keefe went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI, as the Hawks downed the Rams, 11-1, at Smithson Field in Merion Station, Pennsylvania.

With the loss, Fordham has lost six straight, falling to 10-13 on the year, 0-4 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph's improved to 11-13 on the year, 3-1 in the league.

Saint Joseph's opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, as the Hawks loaded the bases on two walks and a single, and got a sacrifice fly by Chris Hueth.

The Hawks added three runs in the second inning to pull out to a 4-0 edge, getting an RBI-double by Kevin Kratochwill and a two-run home run by Stefan Kancylarz.

The score remained at 4-0 until the fifth, when Fordham pulled to within three, 4-1. Joseph Runco drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by Ian Edmiston. After an error moved Runco to third, Sam Careccia plated him with an RBI-ground out.

The Hawks quickly got that run back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-single by Greg Kumpel, scoring Brian O'Keefe, who singled and moved to second on a wild pitch.

Saint Joseph's put the game away in the seventh with a six-run explosion, sending ten batters to the plate. The big hits in the rally were a two-run single by John Brue and a three-run home run by O'Keefe.

Fordham starting pitcher Joseph Charest fell to 1-4 on the year, giving up nine runs on 13 hits over six-plus innings with five strikeouts. J.C. Porter pitched two innings of relief, allowing two runs on four hits.

At the plate, Fordham managed six hits, two of which were off the bat of Charles Galiano. Mike Mauri, Tim Swatek, Ryan McNally, and Runco had the remaining four hits.

The same two teams will match-up again on Friday with game time set for 3:00 PM.
