Baseball Drops A-10 Opener to La Salle, 4-2

Philadelphia, Pa. - La Salle's Ryan Welling hit a three-run home run in the second inning, while the pitching trio of Ryan Donohue, Mike McLeod, and Pat Christensen held Fordham to five hits, as the Explorers opened A-10 play with a 4-2 win over the Rams at Hank DeVincent Field in Philadelphia.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 10-9 overall, 0-1 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle improved to 5-14 overall, 1-0 in the league.

Fordham got on the board first in the second inning. Mike Mauri was walked to start the frame, while Charles Galiano was hit by a pitch. After a pair of strikeouts, Ian Edmiston drew another walk to load the bases. Joseph DeVito then ripped a single through the right side, scoring Mauri from third.

La Salle quickly answered in the bottom of the frame, as with two on, Ryan Welling hit a three-run home run to left, his second of the season, giving the Explorers a 3-1 lead.

Fordham closed the gap to 3-2 in the third, when Mauri tripled into right, scoring Tim Swatek from first, after he was hit by a pitch.

The score remained that way until La Salle added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI-double by Justin Korenblatt, scoring Kevin Baron.

Fordham starter Joseph Charest (1-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits over seven innings of work, while Brett Kennedy pitched one inning of relief, giving up a run and striking out two.

La Salle's Ryan Donohue (1-1) earned the win, giving up two runs on three hits with five strikeouts over six innings of work. Pat Christensen recorded his second save of the year, giving up one hit in 2.2 innings of relief with two strikeouts.

The same two teams will match-up for game two of the series on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
