The Frankie Frisch Invitational came to a close on Sunday with three contests, as weather created a little bit of havoc with the schedule. The final day saw NJIT, Sacred Heart, and Fordham pull out wins at Houlihan Park, leaving Fordham at 10-7 on the year, Sacred Heart at 3-8, NJIT at 5-8, and Saint Peter's at 5-9.
The first game saw NJIT topple Sacred Heart by a 6-3 final score. The Pioneers led 3-0 after six innings, but the Highlanders scored six runs over the final three innings to earn the win. Mark Leiter Jr. earned the victory allowing two earned runs over seven innings of work with five strikeouts, while Kyle Burdi earned his first save of the season.
In game two, the Pioneers bounced back with a 9-1 victory over the Fordham Rams.
Sacred Heart's pitching combination of Nick Leiningen and Troy Scribner held Fordham in check, limiting the Rams to just one run on five hits.
After scoring single runs in the first and second innings, Sacred Heart exploded for four runs in the fourth inning to open up a 6-0 lead. The rally was highlighted by a bases loaded triple by Jesus Medina. Later, the Pioneers picked up a two-run double by Victor Sorrento and an RBI-ground rule double by John Murphy to close out the Sacred Heart scoring.
Fordham's lone run came in the sixth, when Tim Swatek reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a single by Mike Mauri, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Charles Galiano.
Fordham's Chris Pike (1-2) took the loss, allowing eight runs on 11 hits over five innings of work. Jonathan Reich pitched two scoreless innings with Ryan Fedak, Dan Sorine, Jeremy Adel, and Jordan Gajdos closing out the final two innings.
At the plate, Matthew Cianci was the lone Ram with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases.
The final game of the Frankie Frisch Invitational saw the Rams outlast Saint Peter's, 8-5.
After trading runs in the third inning, Saint Peter's pulled ahead in the fourth at 2-1, but Fordham answered with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the frame to grab a 5-2 lead. The Rams took advantage of two walks, a hit by pitch, two wild pitches and a balk to tie the game, which was followed by a two-run triple by Galiano. After another hit by pitch, Galiano made it a three-run game, scoring on an infield single by Ian Edmiston.
The Peacocks tied the game in the top of the fifth on a two-run triple by Matt Speckmann and an RBI-single from Farrell, which chased Fordham starter Joseph Serrapica from the game after 4.2 innings of work, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and three walks.
Fordham battled back to take an 8-5 lead by the bottom of the seventh, scoring twice in the sixth and one in the seventh. The sixth inning saw Galiano get hit by a pitch and score an RBI-triple from Ryan McNally to the left field corner, with McNally later scoring on a wild pitch. The seventh inning then repeated the same scoring, as Swatek hit his second triple of the game and scored on a wild pitch.
Fordham reliever Brett Kennedy (2-1) kept the Peacocks off the scoreboard for the final four innings to earn the win, allowing just two hits and striking out six.
At the plate, Galiano was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI, while Swatek was 2-for-4 with two triples, two runs scored and an RBI.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Wednesday, March 20th, when the Rams host Hofstra at 3:30 PM.
