Behind a three-RBI day by Tanner Nivins and 5.1 innings of scoreless relief from the Stony Brook bullpen, the Seawolves captured the series finale against the Fordham Rams on Monday by a 3-2 score at Joe Nathan Field.
With the loss, Fordham moves to 7-6, while Stony Brook improved to 4-10.
The Seawolves scored right away in the bottom of the first inning. Cole Peragine started the frame with a double down the right field line and moved to third on an infield single by Jack Parenty. After a stolen base by Parenty, Tanner Nivins drove in both runs with a single to left for a 2-0 lead.
Stony Brook increased the lead to 3-0 in the third, taking advantage of three Fordham errors in the inning to score a run.
Fordham got right back into the game in the top of the fourth, when Ian Edmiston reached base on an infield single with one out. Ryan McNally followed with a two-run home run to left for his first career home run, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
The Rams though were unable to push across the tying run, as Stony Brook's Tim Knesnik, Kenny Ball, and Tyler Honahan combined to hold Fordham scoreless over the final 5.1 innings. Knesnik (2-0) got the win, pitching 3.1 hitless innings, while Honahan recorded his third save of the year.
Rich Anastasi (0-2) was the hard luck loser for Fordham, allowing two earned runs on six hits over six innings with four strikeouts. Cody Johnson improved his scoreless innings streak to 16 with two innings of relief with three strikeouts.
At the plate, McNally was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, while Tim Swatek was also 2-for-3.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Friday, March 15th, when the Rams host the Frankie Frisch Invitational at Houlihan Park. Fordham will play NJIT in the first game at noon, followed by Saint Peter's and Sacred Heart.
