It was an up-and-down day for the Fordham baseball team on Sunday, as the Rams split a doubleheader with the Stony Brook Seawolves at Houlihan Park. The opener saw Stony Brook's Frankie Vanderka throw a complete game no-hitter in a 2-0 decision, while Fordham returned the shutout in game two, as freshman Joseph Serrapica shut out the Seawolves, 3-0.
With the split, Fordham moves to 7-5 on the season, while Stony Brook is 3-9.
The first of two seven-inning contests was dominated by Stony Brook's Frankie Vanderka, as he pitched a complete game, no-hitter in a 2-0 win. It was the second no-hitter of Vanderka's career.
The game was a pitcher's duel between Vanderka and Fordham's Chris Pike. Both hurlers kept the opposing team off the scoreboard into extra innings.
Pike pitched eight shutout innings, giving up just three hits with six strikeouts, but Vanderka matched each scoreless frame for Stony Brook.
Then in the ninth, Fordham reliever Brett Kennedy gave up back-to-back triples to Johnny Caputo and Tanner Nivins to put the Seawolves ahead, 1-0. Later in the frame, a fielder's choice from Steve Goldstein plated Nivins for a two-run edge.
The Rams were unable to break up Vanderka's no-hit bid in the ninth, as Fordham managed only four baserunners in the game with three on walks and one on an error.
In game two, the Fordham bats came alive for a three-run first inning, which was plenty for freshman Joseph Serrapica, who threw his first career shutout.
Fordham's first inning started with back-to-back singles by Matthew Cianci and Joseph Runco to put runners at the corners. Runco then stole second with the pitch going wild, and allowing Cianci to score. A walk to Tim Swatek and a ground out gave Fordham runners at second and third for Ryan Lee. Lee then poked a seeing-eye single into center, scoring both runners for a 3-0 lead.
Serrapica (2-0) and the Fordham defense took over from there, limiting Stony Brook to only five hits in the game. The Rams turned two double plays in the game, stopping potential rallies in the first and fourth innings, while Serrapica was on fire, striking out six in the seven-inning shutout win.
The same two teams look to conclude the four-game series on Monday afternoon at Stony Brook, beginning at 3:00 PM (pending field conditions).
