Men's Basketball Falls at La Salle

Philadelphia, Pa. - While the New York City area and points north were hit with barrage of snow on Friday night, the Fordham University men's basketball squad was hit with a barrage of three-pointers today as La Salle University tied a school record with 18 long distance field goals en route to an 89-53 Atlantic 10 win over the Rams in the Tom Gola Arena.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 6-18 overall, 2-7 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle improves to 16-6 overall, 6-3 in the conference.

The Explorers shot 54.5% (18-33) from behind the arc in the game, a sizzling 64.4% (13-19) in the first half, hitting their first eight three-point shots to open the game. The first five trifectas helped La Salle jump out to a 21-7 lead over the first six minutes.

La Salle would get the lead to as many as 23, 39-16, with 5:49 left in the first half before four points from Mandell Thomas made it a 19-pont game, 39-20, 35 seconds later. But a 12-2 Explorer run bumped the home team's lead to 29, 51-22, with 1:18 left and La Salle took a 56-25 lead into the break.

The second half started out much the same as the first as La Salle scored the first ten points, connecting on its first two three-pointers, to take a 66-25 lead with 16:32 remaining.

Travion Leonard and Jermaine Myers led the Rams with ten points each, with Myers adding six assists, while Thomas chipped in with nine points and Ryan Canty finished with five points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday night, February 13, as they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, to face the Xavier University Musketeers in an Atlantic 10 matchup at 7:00 p.m.

Leo Walsh made his collegiate debut for the Rams and scored his first collegiate points on a put back with 1:12 left... Myers' six assists is a season-high, surpassing the five he dished out versus Dayton, while his ten points is one shy of his season-best... Senior forward Chris Gaston missed his sixth straight, and 12th overall, game with an injury... Fordham outrebounded the Explorers, 37-35, the 12th time over the past 17 games at the Rams have outrebounded their opponent... La Salle shot better from behind the arc, 54.5% (18-33), than inside it, 40.0% (12-30)... Some La Salle players wore pink sneakers for breast cancer awareness.
