Bronx, N.Y. - Behind two stellar outings from freshmen pitchers Cody Johnson and Brett Kennedy, the Fordham baseball team opened its 2013 home schedule on Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of the Saint Peter's Peacocks at Houlihan Park in the Bronx. The two wins puts Fordham over the .500 mark at 3-2 and on a three-game winning streak, while Saint Peter's falls to 1-3.
In game one, freshman pitcher Cody Johnson was the story, tossing a complete game, two-hit shutout in a 1-0 win for Fordham in seven innings.
It was the classic pitcher's duel between Johnson and Saint Peter's Eric Mozeika, as each allowed only two hits in the ballgame.
The only scoring came in the bottom of the second inning, when Fordham's Tim Swatek led off with a triple to right center, and three batters later, scored on Joseph Runco's single to left.
That run held up, as Johnson (1-0), allowed only one runner to reach third, while walking two and striking out five. Mozeika (0-1) was the hard luck loser, allowing just the one run on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
In game two, freshman Charles Galiano singled home Mike Mauri in the fifth inning to put Fordham ahead, while freshman Brett Kennedy struck out eight in three innings of relief to wrap up a 4-2 victory for the Rams.
Saint Peter's took the early lead in the first off Fordham starter John Porter, as the Peacocks loaded the bases with two out and received an RBI-single from Pat Farrell for a 1-0 lead.
Fordham responded quickly, notching a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. With one out,
Ryan Phelan singled through the left side and moved to third on a double by Runco. Phelan then scored on a wild pitch with Runco scoring on an RBI-single from
Ian Edmiston.
The Peacocks knotted the game two in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of a Fordham error, and having a run score on a wild pitch.
The Rams came back with single runs in the fifth and sixth inning to regain the lead at 4-2. In the fifth, Mauri and Swatek each drew a walk and moved up a base on a wild pitch. Charles Galiano then ripped a single threw a drawn in infield to plate Mauri. One inning later, the Rams loaded the bases on two walks and a single, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Mauri, which plated Joe Calabrese from third.
From there, Fordham freshman reliever Brett Kennedy (1-0) took over, as he struck out eight of the ten batters he faced to seal his first career win. At the plate, Matthew Cianci was 2-for-4 at the plate, while Galiano and Edmiston were each 1-for-2 with an RBI.
