BRONX, N.Y. -
In the second day of action at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla., the Fordham Rams suffered a pair of defeats, falling to Indiana, 1-0, before losing a 6-5 decision to Pacific.
Game One
Despite a stellar performance in the circle from Jamie LaBovick, Fordham fell 1-0 to the Indiana Hoosiers in NFCA Leadoff Classic.
The Rams couldn't have asked for much more out of LaBovick, as the senior from Peoria, Ariz., surrendered only one run on two hits in six innings of work on Saturday afternoon. LaBovick even carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before three consecutive Hoosiers reached base and Amanda Wagner drove home the only run of the game with a single through the right side.
The Rams had seven hits on the contest, but couldn't seem to get a run across the plate. Fordham left four on base and had one runner thrown out at home.
Despite picking up the loss, LaBovick holds a 1.85 ERA on the season and has registered 20 strikeouts while only giving up seven walks.
Game Two
Pacific scored three runs in the top of the seventh innings to down Fordham, 6-5, on Saturday afternoon.
The Rams got on the board early in game number two of the day. LaBovick led off the contest with a single to right field and Sammi Smith's one-bagger on the next at bat gave Fordham runners on first and second with no out. Kayla Lombardo moved each runner over a base with a sacrifice bunt before a Gabby Luety single drove home LaBovick and put Fordham up, 1-0.
Michelle Daubman held the Tigers scoreless through the first four innings before giving up a run in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom half of the fifth with two runners on, Elise Fortier blasted a three-run shot to give the Rams some breathing room, putting Fordham up 4-1.
Pacific answered back with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but Patti Maloney came in and got the final out of the frame to preserve the lead at one.
Sammi Smith then extended the Fordham lead to two with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
The Rams, however, couldn't maintain their lead. Maloney surrendered a walk to start the top of the 7th and LaBovick came in to pitch in relief. She surrendered three runs, none of them earned, as Pacific grabbed back the lead, 6-5.
The Rams have one game remaining in the NFCA Leadoff Classic, taking on UC Davis at 11:30 Sunday morning.
