BRONX, N.Y. -
Over 1,500 local school children in attendance for Wednesday afternoon's game witnessed a gem, as four Fordham players finished in double figures to help down George Washington, 66-56, in the Rose Hill Gym.
Fordham moved to 17-7 (7-2) with the victory, while GW dropped to 11-13 (5-5).
Erin Rooney narrowly missed a double-double, scoring 13 points, tying a career-high with nine assists and pulling down six rebounds to lead the Rams. Marah Strickland scored a game-high 16 points on 7-14 shooting, while Arielle Collins added 15 and Abigail Corning chipped in 14 points in the victory. Combined on the game, Collins and Corning went 6-10 from beyond the arc.
Samantha Clark started off the game with a put back on the Rams' first possession, grabbing her own rebound and giving Fordham the first lead of the game at 2-0. Her layup kick-started an opening run for the Rams, as they scored the game's first six points and forced GW to take a timeout just over two minutes into the contest.
GW got on the board at the 17:16 mark of the first half, but the Rams went off again, scoring 11 unanswered points to take a 17-2 lead just under six minutes into the game.
The Rams continued to build their lead from there, shooting 12-18 from the field to start the contest and taking a 30-6 lead with just under ten minutes to go in the half. A 30-6 advantage may sound like an uncommon occurrence, but it was the second time in two weeks the Rams held such a margin at home, taking an identical lead over VCU on February 2nd.
After the Colonials hit a three to make it 30-9, the Rams made yet another run, as a Rooney three-pointer and layups from Corning and Strickland extended the Rams' lead to 28, 37-9, with 6:19 to go.
GW began to find the bottom of the bucket more often in the half's closing minutes, but the Rams still scored a season-high 43 points in the first stanza, taking a 20 point lead into the locker room.
In the first 20 minutes of play, the Rams shot 54 percent from the floor, 56 percent from three (including a 5-7 start), dished out 14 assists and surrendered only six turnovers.
With the Colonials making a bit of a run to begin the second half and cutting the Fordham lead to 13, Collins responded by hitting her fourth three-ball of the day to start a 7-0 run that put the Rams back up by 20, 55-35, with just over 13 minutes to go.
From there, it was never in doubt. The Rams maintained a lead in the area of 20 points over the next ten or so minutes before a late GW run cut the lead to ten to end the game.
The Rams hit the road this weekend, traveling to St. Louis for a Sunday afternoon matchup against the Billikens. Game time for Sunday is set for 2 PM ET.
