It was a crucial weekend for the Fordham men's soccer team hosting back-to-back home games right in the middle of conference play. On Friday, it was freshman
Andrew Hickey scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over UMass. On Sunday, it was déjà vu, as another freshman,
Blake Bohlen, who scored the only goal for the Maroon and White in another 1-0 win, this time over Rhode Island at Jack Coffey Field.
With the win, Fordham improved to 5-8-1 on the year, 2-2-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island fell to 2-10-0 overall, 0-4 in the league.
After a scoreless first half, Fordham scored the only goal of the game in the 48
th minute.
Andrew Hickey took the ball down the left side of the field, hitting a long cross to the right side of the box.
Ryan Walsh got a header toward goal, which Rhode Island goalkeeper Thomas Spenser got a hand on, but
Blake Bohlen quickly pounced on the rebound, knocking the ball in from four yards out for his first collegiate goal.
From there, Fordham held off a number of Rhode Island attacks, which included a deflected shot by Andy Hess that just sailed over the left side of the crossbar, just seconds after Bohlen's goal. Later in the half, it was Matt Sykes with two chances near the top of the box, but both attempts sailed just high, leaving Fordham with the 1-0 win.
In net, Fordham's
Alex Naples made four saves for his second straight shutout and fourth of the season, while Spenser had eight saves for URI.
The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, November 3
rd, as the Rams travel to VCU for a noon match-up.
