George Washington's Jonny Forrest and Sam Summerlin each found the back of the net, while Luke Farrell recorded two saves as the Colonials defeated Fordham, 2-0, on Sunday at the GW Soccer Field.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 3-8-1 overall, 0-2-1 in the Atlantic 10, while George Washington improved to 4-6-2 on the year, 1-0-2 in the league.
After a scoreless first half that saw Fordham outshoot the Colonials, 5-2, Forrest gave the Colonials a 1-0 lead in the second half. After a Fordham foul in the 50th minute, George Washington was awarded a free kick from 30 yards out on the right side, which Abdul Shaban sent toward goal. Forrest was then able to redirect it into the net with a header for his third goal of the year.
The score remained 1-0 for 36 minutes until the Rams were awarded a free kick, which was taken by goalkeeper
Alex Naples. After several passes in the defensive third, a Ram midfielder sent the ball backwards amid heavy pressure. Summerlin then intercepted that pass and fired the ball into an empty net, as Naples was still out of position after the free kick.
Farrell recorded two saves for the shutout, while Naples stopped one shot for Fordham. The Colonials outshot the Rams, 8-7, including 6-2 in the second half, but Fordham held a 14-2 advantage on corner kicks.
The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, October 25
th, when the Rams host Massachusetts at 7:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
