Piscataway, N.J. - (Jan. 26, 2013) - The Fordham University men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in a dual meet in the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center at Rutgers today with the women defeating Rider, 216-74, while falling to Rutgers, 162-132, and the men were edged by Rider, 149.5-144.5, and fell to Yale, 201-97.
The Rams had three double event winners, two for the men and one for the women. For the men, Steve Sholdra won the 500 freestyle in 4:38.77 and the 1000 free in 9:28.69 while Shintaro Noguchi touched first in the 200 free in a season-best time of 1:41.93 and the 100 fly in 49.90, just 0.05 seconds off his season-best.
On the women's side, Brienne Ryan was a double event winner, taking the 100 back in 55.04 , just 0.03 seconds off her season-best, and the 200 back in 2:02.05.
Other event winners for the women included Alana Biagioli, who won the 100 free in 53.70 while also taking second in 200 free (1:55.40) and Shannon Lulley, who took first in the 100 fly in 57.51 and took second in the 50 free (24.73).
Other top three finishers for the Rams in the women's competition were Kara Field, who placed second in 500 free (5:09.64) and third in 1000 free (10:35.87); Chandler Lulley, who took second in 100 free (53.90) and third in 50 free (24.95); Megan Zarriello, who was second in 1000 free in a season-best time of 10:30.17 and third in 500 free (5:12.05); Spencer Chappell, who placed second in 200 back (2:07.08) and third in the 100 back (59.20); Kelly Carroll, who was second in 100 breaststroke (1:06.72) and third in 200 breaststroke (2:24.50); Megan Gehrich, who took second in 400 IM (4:34.68); Aurelia O'Keefe, who was third in the 100 fly (59.72); and Frances Warren, who finished third in 200 fly (2:08.03).
In women's relays, the 400 free relay of Biagioli, Chandler Lulley, Kellie Lyver and Ryan won the race in 3:32.69 just ahead of Fordham's second team of Shannon Lulley, Field, Megan Gray and Carroll (3:39.55) while the 200 medley relay of Ryan, Carroll, Shannon Lulley and Biagioli took second in 1:46.98, less than a second behind the winning team from Rutgers.
Other men with top three finishers for the Rams were Thomas Shetler, who was third in the 50 free (21.77); Andrew Hendrickson, who took third in 1000 free (9:55.84); and Thomas Yi, who placed third in the 100 back (53:02).
The men's 400 free relay of Pat Militti, Yi, Nick Belfanti and Noguchi won the race in 3:09.52.
The Fordham men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action on Saturday, February 2, when they host the University of Massachusetts in the Col. Francis Messmore Aquatics Center at 1:00 p.m.
