Bronx, N.Y. -
The Fordham women's soccer team traveled to Maryland on Sunday for a very tough road match-up against the Terrapins out of the ACC. The Rams were put under siege, but a 70th minute goal by Kristina Maksuti and a career-high 12 saves from goalkeeper Rachel Suther gave the Rams a 1-0 upset victory in College Park, Maryland.
With the win, Fordham improved to 2-4-0 on the year, while Maryland dropped to 4-2-1 overall. It is the first win for the Rams over an ACC opponent.
Maryland put on the pressure from the get go, as the Terrapins were credited with the first 13 shots of the game, while holding Fordham without one. The Fordham defense was up to the challenge as Suther made six saves in the first half, while the defense blocked a couple of attempts.
Fordham's first shot of the game came from Annie Worden at the 46:49 mark of the second half, but the Terrapins were quickly to counter in the 56th minute, where Maryland's Hayley Brock put in a shot headed for a goal, but was knocked off the line by Fordham defender Maria Swift.
The Rams then got some offensive work moving in the 69th minute, as
Kristina Maksuti let loose a shot that went. Just 55 seconds later,
Kaitlyn Carballeira found Maksuti for another chance. She then ripped a 28-yard drive, which found the upper left 90 for her second goal of the season.
The Rams ` defense made that one goal hold up as Suther made three saves following the goal for a total of 12 for a new career-high.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on September 14th, when the Rams play at Columbia, beginning at 7:00 PM.
