Bronx, N.Y. -
Two weeks ago, the Fordham women's soccer team was 2-5 with just three goals scored and looking to turn things around, as the team began a five-game homestand at Jack Coffey Field. Fast forward five games and 10 goals later, and the Rams are at the .500 mark overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic 10, following a 2-0 win over St. Bonaventure on Sunday.
The win puts Fordham at 6-6-0 overall, 2-0 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure fell to 3-8-1 on the year, 0-2 in the league. The Rams finished the homestand with a 4-1 record.
Fordham was able to play with the lead for most of the contest, as the Rams netted a goal in the 23rd minute. Kristina Maksuti pulled away from a defender and blasted a shot off the right post. The rebound was unable to be cleared with Maksuti getting her own rebound and knocking another shot in for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Maksuti would have further chances to increase the Fordham lead, but hit another post at the start of the second half to keep the game at 1-0.
Fordham would get an insurance marker in the 83rd minute, when Cara Rooney intercepted a bad clear, and from the right side, bent in a shot from 16 yards out inside the far post for her first goal of the season.
All that remained was to keep the sheet clean, as St. Bonaventure's best scoring chance was in the 87th minute, when Abby Maiello put in a low, hard shot that Fordham goalkeeper Rachel Suther was able to snag to preserve the shutout. Suther ended the game with four saves to record her third shutout of the season, and the 15th of her career.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, October 5th, when the Rams travel to VCU for a 7:00 PM game.
