Bronx, N.Y. -
After a disappointing result against St. Francis College on Tuesday night, the Fordham University volleyball squad had the difficult task of putting that match behind them as they continued Atlantic 10 play tonight by hosting the Charlotte 49ers in the Rose Hill Gym. And the Rams were successful with the assignment, coming out strong, winning the first two sets, in a 3-1 win over the 49ers. Scores of the sets were 25-19, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-20.
With the win, Fordham improves to 10-12 overall, 2-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Charlotte falls to 8-7 overall, 0-3 in the conference.
The first set was even through the first five points with a Lily Vera kill tying the set at five for the 49ers. A Carina Thompson kill ignited a 6-1 Fordham spurt as the Rams took an 11-6 lead following a Lisa Hipp kill. Fordham maintained at least a four-point lead the rest of the way, eventually opening a 22-13 advantage on a Brianna O'Neil service ace, her second of the set, which capped a 5-0 run for the Rams. Charlotte would get no closer than five the rest of the way, 24-19, but Sara Konkel ended the set with an ace.
The second set was similar to the first, with the score knotted at nine following a Randi Ewing kill. The 49ers then took a slim 14-12 lead before Fordham scored seven straight points, five off of Charlotte attack errors, to take a 19-14 lead. The 49ers would cut into the Fordham lead, eventually making it a two-point contest, 21-19, but the Rams scored the final four points of the set to take the 25-19 win.
The third set was also evenly played, with eleven ties in the set, the final at 19 following a Carly Ochs kill for the 49ers. Two more Ochs kills put Charlotte up 21-19 but the Rams battled back, scoring four of the next five points to take a 23-22 lead following a Konkel kill. But Charlotte scored the final three points off Fordham miscues to take the set, 25-23, and force a fourth.
Fordham controlled most of the fourth set, trailing only twice. The final Charlotte lead was at 8-7 when Fordham scored five unanswered points, two from Hipp kills, to take the lead for good, 13-8. The Rams increased the lead to as many as seven, 21-14, after a Thompson kill, before Charlotte trimmed the Fordham advantage to five, 23-18, on a Fordham service error. But a 49er service error and attack error gave the Rams the victory, 25-20.
Hipp led the Rams with 16 kills, hitting .419 in the match, and she added nine digs, while Brennan Delsing added nine kills and ten digs and Konkel finished with a double-double with 37 assists and 15 digs and she added three service aces.
The Rams continue their Atlantic 10 schedule on Sunday, September 30th, as they host one of the newest conference members, VCU, in the Rose Hill Gym at 1:00 p.m.
