Bronx, N.Y. -
Behind some excellent defense and two timely goals in the second half, the Fordham women's soccer team posted a 2-0 shutout win over the Duquesne Dukes at Jack Coffey Field in the Atlantic 10 conference opener for both schools.
With the win, Fordham improves to 5-6-0 overall, 1-0 in the Atlantic 10, while Duquesne drops to 4-6-1 on the year, 0-1 in the league.
Neither team mustered much offense in the opening 45 minutes, as the two teams played through heavy rains toward the end of the period. The Rams finished with only two shots on goal to Duquesne's one.
The second half saw Fordham jump out on the attack, taking advantage of a corner kick in the 58th minute. A Fordham header off the corner kick was blocked, but during the ensuing scrum in front of the goal, Kaitlin Abrams knocked the ball in for second goal of the season to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
The Rams held onto the 1-0 lead into the 89th minute, when Fordham got an insurance marker from Kate McDonnell. A cross from the top of the box by Kristina Maksuti found McDonnell on the upper right side. McDonnell then put a perfect shot into the top left corner of the goal for her first goal of the season and the first of her career.
In net, Rachel Suther made three saves for her second shutout of the season, while Duquesne's Devon Tabota made six saves.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, September 30th, when the Rams conclude a five-match homestand against Atlantic 10 opponent, St. Bonaventure, at 1:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
