Water Polo Drops Opening Conference Games of 2012

Cambridge, Mass. - The Fordham water polo team opened Northern Division play this weekend in Cambridge, Massachusetts with road contests against Harvard and MIT. Unfortunately for the Rams, neither host was hospitable, handing Fordham two losses to begin conference play.

With the losses, Fordham is now 1-12 overall, 0-2 in the Northern Division.

In the opening game, Harvard downed the Rams, 12-7.

The Crimson led throughout, taking a two-goal lead after the first quarter at 3-1, and increasing it to a 6-3 edge at the half. Harvard surged for five goals in the third, which Fordham could not recover from.

For Fordham, Andrew Gonzalez, Nicholas Allen, and Alex Judge each scored twice with Dan Kearney adding the final tally. In net, Noah LeBeau made seven saves.

In game two, the Rams kept the game close with MIT, but eventually fell by a 9-6 score.

The score was tied at one after the first, and at two by halftime. The Engineers then netted three goals in the third to Fordham's one to take a 5-3 lead into the final period. MIT tallied four times in the fourth quarter to wrap up a 9-6 win.

For the Rams, Gonzalez added two more goals, while Allen, Judge, Bobby Wurtz, and Patrick Lenihan each had one marker. LeBeau made eight saves in net.

The Fordham water polo team will next be in action on Saturday, September 29th, when the Rams host Connecticut College at 2:00 PM and Brown University at 7:00 PM in the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center.
