Bronx, N.Y. -
Despite a 16-9 shot advantage, the Fordham women's soccer team was bested by the Marist College Red Foxes, 1-0, on Jack Coffey Field on Sunday.
With the loss, Fordham moves to 1-3, while Marist improved to 3-1.
Fordham goalkeeper Ally White had to be sharp early on making three saves over the first 17 minutes of the game, before Fordham's Rachel Madacsi tested Marist's goalkeeper Caitlin Landsman in the 21st minute. Madacsi's chip shot was just tapped over the crossbar, while Joann Murino chipped a second shot over the net on the ensuing corner kick for Fordham.
Marist then struck for the lone goal of the game in the 22nd minute, as Jessica Arabia put a long cross from the right side into the box, where Marjana Maksuti, the twin sister of the Rams' Kristina Maksuti, headed the ball into the bottom left of the net for her first goal of the season.
Fordham tried to peg away at the Marist defense, trying to find the equalizer by shooting high on the 5-3 Red Fox goalkeeper. The Rams almost tied the game just before halftime, as Kate McDonnell went for a high shot, but it bounced off the crossbar right into the hands of Landsman.
The Rams tried to mount more pressure in the second half, pushing as many as eight players forward, but Landsman made four of her six saves in the second half to preserve the win for the Red Foxes.
In net for Fordham, White totaled five saves in the loss, while Annie Worden had a team-high three shots on offense.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, September 7th, when the Rams conclude a three-game homestand against the St. John's Red Storm, beginning at 7:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
