Winner of eight of its last 11 matches, the Fordham volleyball team had a chance to get to the .500 mark for the first time this season on Tuesday at Hofstra. The tightly fought match went back and forth eventually going the distance, as the Pride edged the Rams, three sets to two. Final set scores were 22-25, 28-26, 25-15, 18-25, and 15-13.
The loss puts Fordham's record at 8-10 overall, while Hofstra improved to 12-6.
The match opened with set one tied at 16 before a five-point run by the Rams put Fordham in control. The Pride got back within one at 23-22, but back-to-back kills by Brianna O'Neil and Carina Thompson gave Fordham the set win.
Set two looked to be going Fordham's way, as the Rams earned set point, 24-22, on a kill from Brennan Delsing. However, two kills from Hofstra's Kelsie Wills tied the score at 24. Fordham had another chance to close out the set at 25-24, but was again denied by the Pride. Hofstra eventually earned the set win at 28-26.
Both squads then exchanged set wins, leading to the decisive fifth set. The score was tied on seven occasions in the final set, with the final tie at 13 all. A bad set would give Hofstra match point, which the Pride capitalized on with a kill by Emily Burke to end the match.
For Fordham, Lisa Hipp led the way with 18 kills and 10 digs, while Delsing had 16 kills and 14 digs. Sara Konkel had a strong match at setter, registering 48 assists, 10 digs, and six kills with Thompson adding 11 kills and four blocks. Defensively, Maria Rodenberg chipped in 13 digs, three assists, and two aces.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Friday, September 21st, when the Rams open conference play at La Salle, beginning at 7:00 PM.
