The two teams entered the match off big tournament wins last weekend, with victories over ranked teams. Fordham claimed the title at the Brown Invitational, defeating #23 Brown, while Stony Brook was coming off an appearance at Kentucky Invitational, where the Seawolves defeated #7 Charlotte. So it was no surprise that the match tonight was close, but to the chagrin of the Rams it was Stony Brook who pulled out the 2-1 win.
With the win, Stony Brook improves to 4-2 on the year while the Rams even their record at 3-3.
The Seawolves struck first as in the 26th minute, Leonardo Fernandes fed a pass to Alejandro Fritz inside the box and Fritz got off a shot from eight yards that beat Fordham keeper Sean Brailey to the top left corner. It was the third goal of the year for Fritz.
The game remained 1-0 for the Seawolves until early in the second half when Kyle Bitterman sent a cross into the box to Kalle Sotka and Sotka put a foot on the pass, sending the ball past Stony Brook keeper Stefan Manz and into the top right corner to knot the game at one in the 55th minute. It was Sotka's second tally of the year, his second in as many games.
But the scored didn't stay tied for long as in the 63rd minute Stony Brook's Antonio Crespi crossed the ball from about 25 yards out to Fernandes in the box and Fernandes found the back of the net with his second goal of the year to give the Seawolves a 2-1 advantage.
The Stony Brook defense made the 2-1 lead hold up, holding the Rams to just seven second half shots, with only one of those on net.
Brailey finished with eight saves for Fordham while Manz recorded two for the Seawolves, who outshot Fordham, 19-8.
The Rams will next be in action on Friday night, September 21st, as they travel to New Haven, Connecticut, to face the Yale University Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m.
