Bronx, N.Y. -
After a poor hitting first set, Fordham volleyball coach Peter Volkert made a change at setter, bringing in junior Sara Konkel off the bench to change the momentum for the Rams. The change worked as the Rams reeled off three straight set wins to defeat the Leopards in four sets. Final set scores were 18-25, 25-14, 25-23, and 25-16.
With the win, Fordham improved to 5-9 on the season, while Lafayette fell to 6-2.
The first set was pretty negative for the Rams, as the team hit -.094 for the set, which easily led the Leopards to a seven-point set win.
Then came the change at setter for Fordham in the second set, and the two teams played role reversal. The Rams hit over .300 for the set, while the Leopards hit in the negative at -.034, as Fordham evened the match with an 11-point set win.
The third set was very tight with Fordham eventually leading 23-20, before a kill and an error pulled Lafayette within one, 23-22. Side out errors by both teams left Fordham with set point, and the Rams finished the set with a kill by Brennan Delsing to get a 2-1 set lead.
Set four was even at ten before the Rams reeled off five straight points, which included two service aces by Maria Rodenberg, to give Fordham a 15-10 lead. Lafayette fought back to within 16-15, but the Rams again responded with a 7-0 run, which was capped by back-to-back blocks by Carina Thompson and Konkel, and would eventually lead to a 25-16 win.
For Fordham, Konkel finished with 31 assists, nine digs, four blocks and two aces, while Lisa Hipp had a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs. Brianna O'Neil also chipped in 11 kills, with Delsing adding 10 kills and seven digs. Rodenberg also had 21 digs defensively for the Rams.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on September 14th and 15th, when the Rams travel to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, to compete in the Bucknell Invitational.
