Volleyball Edged in Home Opener by Rutgers in Five Sets

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham volleyball team searched for its first win of the season on Wednesday night in the team's home opener against Rutgers at the Rose Hill Gym. The Rams would take a 2-1 set lead, but the Scarlet Knights outlasted the Rams in the final two sets to take home the five-set victory. Final set scores were 23-25, 25-13, 22-25, 25-17, and 16-14.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 0-5, while Rutgers improved to 3-1.

Fordham came out with the early lead in the first set, building a five-point lead at 10-5. Rutgers rallied back late and staved off four set points before a kill by Brennan Delsing earned the Rams a 25-23 set win.

Rutgers bounced back in set two, as Fordham was bogged down with 12 attack errors en route to a 25-13 second set score in favor of the Scarlet Knights.

Fordham looked to the get the momentum back in the third set, getting out to a 10-4 lead before eventually winning the set, 25-22. The Rams were keyed by Carina Thompson in that set, as she tallied six kills.

The Scarlet Knights then fought their way back to lead 12-8 in the fourth set, before Fordham netted four straight points to tie the score at 12. Rutgers, then, scored seven of the next nine points to regain the edge, eventually winning the set by eight, 25-17.

The deciding set would see five tie scores with the final one at 14-14 before back-to-back kills by Brittany Bozzini and Rachel Andreassian gave Rutgers the match win.

For Fordham, Lisa Hipp recorded a team-high 15 kills to go with eight digs, while Delsing added a season-high 13 kills, seven digs, and three blocks. Carina Thompson also added ten kills and four blocks with Abigail Konovodoff registering 45 assists, nine digs, and three kills. Defensively, Maria Rodenberg also had a team-high 15 digs.

The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action this weekend, when the Rams participate in the Volley in the Valley Tournament, hosted by Marist College. The Rams open with a match against Hartford at 10:00 AM on Saturday, followed by a 3:30 PM match against NJIT.
