The Fordham volleyball team opened its 2012 season on Friday at the Boston College Invitational in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. The Rams fell in their first two matches, losing to Texas Tech in four sets and to Siena in three.
In the opening match of the tournament, Fordham finished on the short end of a roller coaster match with Texas Tech by a final score of 3-1. Final set scores were 26-24, 25-12, 27-29, and 25-11.
The first set saw Fordham trail by as many as seven points, but an 8-2 rally tied the score at 21 all, capped by a kill from the Rams' Brennan Delsing. After trading points, Fordham earned set point at 24-22, following back-to-back kills from Lisa Hipp. However, Texas Tech fought off two set points and then capitalized on two Fordham attack errors, one of which was a block to end the set, 26-24, in favor of the Red Raiders. Delsing led the Rams with six kills in the opening set.
Set two was all Texas Tech, as the team held Fordham to a -.148 hitting percentage and posted five team blocks en route to a 13-point set win.
Fordham pulled to within one set with a 29-27 third set win over Texas Tech. This time, it was the Rams fighting off three set points and tying the score at 27 all. Fordham then got a kill from Hipp as well as a block from Hipp and Randi Ewing to close out the set.
Texas Tech then regrouped in the fourth set, scoring 11 of the final 12 points to earn a 25-11 victory and close out the match. The Red Raiders hit .364 in the final set compared to Fordham's -.115.
For Fordham, Hipp had a match-high 13 kills to go with six digs and four blocks, while Delsing had 11 kills and nine digs in her first action as a Ram. Abigail Konovodoff also made her first career start a good one, tallying 36 assists, five kills, seven digs, and three blocks, while Ewing had eight kills and five blocks. Brianna O'Neil was the final freshman debut this morning, registering nine kills. Defensively, Michele Keathley and Maria Rodenberg each had 10 digs and two assists.
In the second match of the day, Siena's Taylor Akana recorded a match-high 12 kills, while her team hit .326 for the match, as the Saints swept the Rams in three sets. Final set scores were 25-13, 25-21, and 25-21.
Fordham was slow out of the gate in the opening frame, hitting -.172 compared to Siena's .348.
Set two was closer between the two squads, as the score was tied at 11 before a quick five-point run put the Saints in the lead. Fordham tried to fight back, getting within two points on two occasions, 21-19, and 22-20, but could not get closer.
The third set was a four-point win for Siena to close out the match, where the Saints hit .441 with only four errors.
For Fordham, Hipp had a team-high 10 kills with Ewing adding seven kills and four blocks. Carina Thompson added four kills and five blocks, while Konovodoff posted 25 assists, four digs, and four blocks.
The Fordham volleyball team concludes play at the Boston College Invitational on Saturday, when the Rams play host Boston College at noon and Binghamton at 5:00 PM.
