Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham closed out Atlantic 10 conference play by dropping a pair of games, 1-0 and 6-3, to Rhode Island on Sunday from Bahoshy Field in the Bronx. Between the games of the doubleheader, Fordham conducted its Senior Day ceremony and honored the five senior members of the team: Jose Hernandez, Lindsey Kay Bright, Nicole Callahan, Jo Krasnisky and Jen Mineau.
Game 1:
The first game opened with Mineau dominating early as she struck out seven of the first nine batters in the URI lineup, surrendering just a pair of harmless singles across the first three innings. Rhode Island starter, Erika Szymanski, was equal to the task, as she blanked Fordham over the first three innings while giving up just three innocuous hits.
The game's only run came in the fourth inning as Courtney Prendergast led off the frame with a solo home run over the wall in left field.
Fordham tried to answer in its half of the inning as Callahan singled to left center. Brianna Ciufficame in to run for her, and moved to second on a ground out and to third on a wild pitch where she was stranded.
Mineau retired the next nine Rhode Island batters in order and they visitors didn't have another base runner after the fourth inning.
Fordham had two chances to tie the game, but wasn't successful either time. In the sixth, Bright ripped a one-out single up the middle and Callahan followed with a line drive that was snagged by the shortstop who doubled Bright off first to help preserve the 1-0 lead.
In the seventh, Elise Fortierconnected on a two-out base hit, but that was all Fordham could muster.
Mineau allowed one run on four hits and struck out 13, but was tagged with the loss. LaBovick and Fortier each had two hits for Fordham.
Game 2:
Game two began similarly to game one for Fordham in that starting pitcher Michele Daubman set down the first six Rhode Island hitters in order. In the bottom of the second, the Rams opened the frame with a pair of singles from Fortier and Paige Ortiz. However, URI got out of the jam by retiring the next three batters on a pair of strikeouts and a fly out.
Rhode Island jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third as Stacey Foxx opened the inning reaching on an error and was sacrificed to second, Meg Kelly was hit by a pitch, giving URI runners on first and second for Brittany Julich, who hit into a fielder's choice for the second out. With two on, Kelly Coker connected on a triple into the right-field corner, plating Kelly and Julich. Coker tried to come all the way around to score and was gunned down on a relay from Jo Krasnisky to Nicole Callahan to Kayla Lombardo.
Rhode Island extended its advantage to 5-0 just an inning later as Jocelyn Mattison hit a two-run home run to the opposite field while Alison Hartzell tripled and scored on an RBI groundout from Foxx. URI scored again in the sixth and took a 6-0 lead into the seventh.
The Fordham bats finally came alive in final inning as Jessica Crowley opened the frame with a double to left. Brianna Turgeonfollowed with a two-bagger of her own, getting the Rams on the board and keeping the rally going. LaBovick followed with the third straight hit to give Fordham runners on the corners. After the first out was recorded, Callahan brought the Rams within 6-2, connecting on an RBI groundout that scored Turgeon. Fortier followed with the fourth base hit of the inning, scoring LaBovick to help Fordham cut the Rode Island lead to 6-3. Ortiz followed with a single and pinch hitter Gabby Luety, who represented the tying run, was hit by a pitch. However, Fordham couldn't get another run across the plate.
Oritz had a game-high three hits in the game two loss.
The Rams are 30-24 overall, 14-6 in conference play. Rhode Island finished its season at 21-32-1, 5-14-1 in the A-10.
The Rams close out regular season play with a final home game against #3/4 Alabama on Monday, May 7 on Bahoshy Field at 6:00 PM.
