Bronx, N.Y. -
Behind another complete game performance from Daniel Munday and a 15-hit barrage from the offense, the Fordham baseball team opened its Atlantic 10 series against Rhode Island with a 7-1 victory at Houlihan Park on Friday.
With the win, Fordham improves to 20-29 overall, 11-8 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island moves to 26-20 on the year, 11-5 in the league.
Rhode Island struck first, as they picked up a run on an RBI-single by Pat Quinn in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.
Fordham responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning, as Stephen McSherry led off with a double down the right field line and was sacrificed to third by Brian Kownacki. After a walk and stolen base by Matthew Cianci, McSherry came home to score on an infield single by Ryan Phelan to tie the game. Fordham then picked up a second run on an error by the URI shortstop to make it a 2-1 game.
Fordham added a third run in the bottom of the fifth inning, when
Mike Mauri laced a triple to center field and scored on an RBI-single from
Ryan Maghini.
Fordham followed with three more runs in the sixth and one in the eighth to extend the lead to 7-1. In the sixth, Phelan drew a one-out walk and scored on a double to left center by Rob McCunney. Tim Swatek followed with a triple to center to score McCunney, while Mauri singled home Swatek for a 6-1 lead.
Then in the eighth, Swatek connected for a ground rule double to left and scored on a Mauri single, giving Fordham the 7-1 lead.
The run support was plenty for Fordham starting pitcher Daniel Munday, as he improved to 5-3 on the season. He tossed his second complete game of the season, allowing one run on five hits with two strikeouts. He allowed just two base runners to get to third base all game.
At the plate, Swatek was 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, and two runs scored, while Mauri was 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Maghini was also 3-for-5 with an RBI, while McSherry went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
The same two teams will match-up for game two of the series at 1:00 PM on Saturday.
