After putting together a good team effort on Saturday, everything went the other way for the Fordham baseball team on Sunday, as Boston College drilled out 15 runs on 19 hits en route to a 15-3 victory over the Rams at Commander Shea Field in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
The loss put the Rams at 22-31 this season, while Boston College improved to 21-30.
Fordham opened the scoring in the first inning, as Ryan Lee singled with one out, moved to second after a walk to Ryan Maghini, and scored on a single by Mike Mauri.
The Eagles quickly tied the game in the bottom of the inning, as Marc Perdios led off with a double to left and scored on Tom Bourdon's single.
The Rams regained the lead in the second at 2-1, as Brian Kownacki drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second, and scored on a double from Rob McCunney.
Boston College again had the response in the bottom of the frame, when Tyler Hinchcliffe, singled home Andrew Lawrence with two outs, after Lawrence singled and moved to second on a walk to Nate LaPointe.
The Eagles then took their first lead of the series in the third at 3-2, loading the bases with two outs and getting a walk to Lawrence to force in the go-ahead run.
Boston College blew the game open with six-run outbursts in both the fourth and eighth innings, to lead by a 15-3 count.
Fordham's only other run came in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Tim Swatek, his fourth of the season, and extending his hit streak to 12 games, tying his career-long streak.
John Porter (2-7) took the loss for Fordham, giving up nine runs on 13 hits and four walks over the first four innings, while having four strikeouts. Jordan Grangard (2 IP, 2 K's) and Swatek (1 IP, 1 H) held Boston College in check over the middle innings, but the Eagles got to Zach Small, as he allowed six runs on five hits with two walks in just one inning of work.
At the plate, Maghini was 2-for-3, while Mauri, Swatek, and McCunney each had a hit and an RBI.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Thursday, May 17th, as the team travels to Richmond for a three-game series with the Spiders in one of two major playoff showdowns in the final weekend, along with the Saint Joseph's-Xavier series in Ohio. The four teams currently sit in fourth (Saint Joseph's - 12-8), fifth (Fordham - 12-9), and sixth place (Richmond & Xavier - 11-10). Massachusetts is also in the mix at 11-10 in the league, as the Minutemen host George Washington.
The top six teams in the league qualify for the 2012 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship, May 23rd-26th, which will be hosted at Fordham's Houlihan Park.
