Taking advantage of some wildness by Boston College pitching, the Fordham Rams knocked off the Eagles, 7-4, at Shea Field, behind a nice pitching performance from the duo of Daniel Munday and Joseph Charest.
With the win, Fordham improves to 22-30 on the season, while Boston College fell to 20-30.
Meeting for only the fourth time since 1942, Fordham opened the scoring with a three-run rally in the top of the first inning. Tim Swatek led off with a single, extending his season-high hit streak to 11 games. Mike Mauri followed with a single through the left side, and both runners advanced on Ryan Maghini's sacrifice bunt. Ryan Lee then drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Stephen McSherry came through with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Swatek with Mauri advancing to third. The Rams reloaded the bases on Brian Kownacki's hit by pitch, and then got two more runs on Matthew Cianci's hit by pitch and a walk to Ryan Phelan.
The Rams extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth, as walks to Phelan and Mauri and a single by Swatek loaded the bases with two outs. Maghini then drew another walk to force in Phelan for a four-run lead.
Boston College battled back with a single run in the fourth and three in the fifth to tie the game at four. The Eagles got RBI-singles by Rob Moir and Anthony Melchionda, as well as run-producing outs from Blake Butera and Tom Bourdon to knot the game at four.
Fordham responded by scoring twice in the sixth to regain the lead at 6-4. With two outs, Swatek was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by Mauri. Maghini then laced a two-run double to left field, scoring both runners for the two-run edge.
The Rams added on another run in the eighth, when Fordham loaded the bases once again on a double by Phelan, an error, and an intentional walk. Mauri then drew a walk to force in the seventh run of the game.
Fordham got a solid pitching outing from the duo of Daniel Munday and Joseph Charest. Munday received a no-decision as he allowed four runs on five hits with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings, while Charest improved to 5-8 on the season, as he closed out the game with 4.2 innings of two-hit relief with three strikeouts.
At the plate, Swatek was 2-for-2, reaching base all five time he batted and scoring two runs, while Mauri was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Maghini finished 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI with Phelan going 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored.
The same two teams will match-up for the second game of the series on Sunday, beginning at 1:00 PM.
