Final Stats
Dayton, Ohio - It was déjà vu all over again for the softball teams of Dayton and Fordham as each side took a game in a doubleheader that was moved up due to weather for the second straight year. The Flyers took the opener, 2-1, while the Rams won the nightcap, 11-0, at the Dayton Softball Field in Dayton, Ohio on Friday. The split moved the Rams' record to 30-20 overal1 and 14-2 in the Atlantic 10.
Game One
The first game began with neither side threatening to score early, with Fordham starter Jen Mineaustriking out the side in the second.
The Rams rallied in the third when Jamie LaBovick ripped a one-out single to left center. Lindsey Kay Bright followed her with a base hit to center that put runners on the corners with one out. For Bright, that was career hit number 200, making her just the fifth Fordham softball player to reach the milestone. Nicole Callahanwas next, and she lifted a fly ball to center that was caught and on the play, LaBovick tagged and tried to score but was thrown out at home to keep the game scoreless.
Mineau struck out the side for the second time in the fourth inning, but she threw one bad pitch in the fifth as leadoff hitter, Jordan Jennings, scored the first run of the game with a solo home run to left.
The Flyers took their 1-0 lead into the final inning where Fordham was able to even the score. This time the leadoff batter was Elise Fortier, and like her opponent two innings earlier, she promptly leveled the score, with a solo shot to left.
Dayton would win the game in the bottom of the seventh as Kasi Vazquez touched Mineau for a walk-off homer over the wall in right center.
Bright and Fortier each had a pair of hits for the Rams while Mineau allowed the two runs and struck out 13 in the loss.
Game Two
Mineau had better luck in game two as the offense gave her 11 runs in the win. Mineau earned her 100th career victory and reached the century mark in complete games as well.
Fordham took a 3-0 lead in the second as Fortier connected on her second home run of the day to leadoff the frame. Later in the inning, Chelsea Palumbo reached on a fielder's choice and Brianna Turgeonblasted a two-run homer over the wall to give the Rams the 3-0 advantage.
The Rams made the score 4-0 an inning later as they manufactured a run. Bright singled and stole second. Callahan followed with a base hit and Paige Ortizconnected on the third hit of the inning to load the bases. From there, Fortier worked a walk that forced home Bright. It was Fortier's second RBI of the game.
Fordham put the game away in the fifth as Bright doubled to left field. Callahan delivered her in with another double to give the Rams a 5-0 lead. Fordham loaded the bases when Ortiz and Fortier reached via a walk and a hit batter. Gabby Luetyfollowed with another hit by pitch that forced home Callahan to make the score 6-0. Ortiz came in on the next play when Palumbo hit an RBI single to left and Turgeon connected on her second home run of the day, a grand slam that made the score 11-0.
Mineau retired the Flyers in order in the fifth and Fordham won via the eight-run rule.
In the second game, Turgeon was 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and six RBI. Bright and Callahan each collected two hits as well.
The Rams close out their road schedule with a rematch against Iona on Tuesday, May 1, at 3:00 PM in New Rochelle, New York.
