Final Stats
Uniondale, N.Y. -
Fordham took an early lead against Hofstra but eventually fell to the Pride, 6-1, on a game played at the Hofstra Softball Stadium on Tuesday. The Rams are now 5-1 against New York State opponents this season and 27-18 overall.
With one out in the first, Nicole Callahan ripped the first pitch that Olivia Galati threw her over the centerfielder's head and off of the base of the wall for a double. Paige Ortiz followed, striking out on a pitch in the dirt but the throw to first by Hofstra catcher Courtney Crews was bad and Ortiz was safe on the error, moving Callahan to third. Brianna Turgeon then brought Callahan home with a sacrifice fly to right and Fordham had a 1-0 lead.
The bottom of the first saw Jen Mineau walk the leadoff hitter, Rachael Senatore, before recording her 300th strikeout of the season, as she fanned Becca Bigler for the first out in the inning. But Tessa Ziemba lifted a home run over the wall in right past the outstretched arm of Michele Daubman, who made a leaping attempt, to give Hofstra a 2-1 lead.
The Rams threatened in the third as Jamie LaBovick singled off the third baseman's glove and Callahan hit into a fielder's choice as LaBovick was forced on the play. Oritz moved Callahan into scoring position with a base hit up the middle but Galati escaped the jam by striking out Turgeon to end the inning.
Hofstra made the score 3-1 in the bottom of the third as Bigler took a pitch over the wall in dead center for a solo home run. The only two hits Mineau allowed through the first three innings were a pair of home runs by the Pride.
Fordham threatened in the fifth as LaBovick ripped a two-out double into the left field corner, but Callahan lined out softly to short to end the inning.
Hofstra picked up some insurance in the sixth as the Pride got a pair of runners on base with a hit batter and a base hit. Ziemba then connected on her second home run, a three run blast to dead center, to make the score 6-1.
Chelsea Palumbo led off the Fordham seventh with a line drive double into the gap in right center. She moved to third on an illegal pitch but was stranded there.
Despite giving up just three hits, Jen Mineau went to 21-10 with the loss while LaBovick had a pair of hits.
Fordham returns to action on Friday, April 20 when the Rams return to Bahoshy Field to host St. Bonaventure in an Atlantic 10 contact at 3:00 PM.
