A long day of baseball that started at 9:00 AM, finished with a flurry, as Ryan Lee's diving catch in the bottom of the ninth sealed a 9-8 come-from-behind win for the Fordham Rams over the Dayton Flyers at Woerner Field in Dayton, Ohio. The win salvaged a split of the doubleheader for Fordham, as they dropped the opener, 11-5.
With the split, Fordham moves to 15-22 on the season, 7-5 in the Atlantic 10, while Dayton slides to 17-20 overall, 8-4 in the league.
In game one, Dayton's Robby Sunderman was 3-for-4 with five RBI, while Tim Bury threw a complete game, as the Flyers opened the doubleheader with an 11-5 win.
Fordham opened the scoring in the second, as the Rams took advantage of a Dayton error. Mike Mauri hit a drive to right, which the rightfielder misplayed, allowing Mauri to reach third. Stephen McSherry followed with a sacrifice fly to give Fordham the lead.
Dayton responded with two runs in the third for a 2-1 edge. With runners at second and third and one out, Joe Gayda connected for a two-run double to left, scoring Bobby Glover and Josh Jeffrey.
Fordham came right back to knot the game at two in the fourth, when Ryan Maghini blasted a solo home run to left, his career-high fifth of the season.
The Rams then regained the lead in the fifth at 3-2. With two outs, Matthew DeSilva doubled to right center and scored on a single up the middle by Tim Swatek.
Fordham extended the lead to 4-2 in the sixth, again taking advantage of a Dayton error. With two outs, Maghini reached on an error and moved to second on a balk. Mauri then singled through the right side to score Maghini from second.
Dayton then came back with a five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-4 lead, highlighted by a three-run triple by Robby Sunderman and an RBI-triple by Mike Coughlin.
The Rams cut into the lead in the seventh, scoring once to make it a 7-5 game, as Brian Kownacki hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field.
The Flyers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take their largest lead of the game at 9-5 on a two-run single by Sunderman.
Dayton added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth, which was enough for Dayton starter Tim Bury. Bury improved to 3-2 on the season, pitching a complete game seven-hitter, giving up three earned runs and striking out seven.
Fordham's Chris Pike (3-1) got hooked for his first loss of the season, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. Rich Anastasi threw 1.2 innings of relief, giving up two unearned runs, while Jonathan Reich gave up two runs in one inning of work.
At the plate, Maghini was 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and two runs scored with Mauri, Kownacki, and DeSilva each having a hit and a run scored.
In game two, Dayton grabbed the lead in the first, as Glover doubled to right center, moved to third on Gayda's single, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brian Blasik.
The Flyers added to the lead with three runs in the second, with the big hit being a two-run home run by Glover.
Dayton then made it 6-0 in the bottom of the third, using the long ball again, as Jared Broughton hit a two-run home run to left.
Fordham finally got its offense going in the fourth, scoring three times to cut the lead in half. With the bases loaded and two outs, DeSilva ripped a two-run single to center, scoring McSherry and
Zach Small with
Matthew Cianci going to third. DeSilva then stole second with the throw getting away, allowing Cianci to score from third.
Dayton got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-single from Gayda, scoring Glover who led off with a double.
Fordham pulled back within three on an RBI-single in the fifth inning from Mauri, as it scored Maghini from third. Maghini had reached on an infield single and went to third on a throwing error.
Dayton got that run back in the bottom of the frame, as the Flyers took advantage of a Fordham error and got an RBI-single from Kuris Duggan.
The Rams would not go away however, scoring three times in the sixth to close within one, 8-7. Cianci led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. DeSilva then drove in Cianci with a single to left center. After a ground out, Ryan Lee plated DeSilva with a single to make it a two-run game. A balk moved Lee to second with Maghini drawing a walk to bring Mauri to the plate. Mauri delivered another RBI-single to score Lee, getting Fordham within one.
Fordham then took its first lead of the game in the eighth, scoring twice for a 9-8 lead. Swatek began the frame with a single and stole second. Lee then doubled to left center to score Swatek and tie the game at eight. Maghini followed with a single to left, moving Lee to third. A stolen base by Maghini and a walk to Mauri loaded the bases for McSherry. McSherry though lined into a double play, leaving runners at first and third. Dayton then hit back-to-back Fordham batters in Kownacki and Small to force in the go-ahead run.
Dayton was held in check by Fordham reliever Jeremy Adel, as he held the Flyers off the board entering the bottom of the ninth. In the ninth, Adel got the first two outs, but singles by Coughlin and Sunderman had runners at first and third. Josh Jeffrey then hit a sinking shot to center, but Lee made a diving catch for the final out and completing the come-from-behind win.
Adel (3-2) earned the win, as he allowed just three hits over four innings of relief. Joseph Charest threw the first five innings, allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits.
At the plate, DeSilva was 2-for-5 with a career-high three RBI, while Mauri was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Lee ended the contest 2-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI with Maghini adding three hits.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Tuesday, April 17th, when the Rams take on the Iona College Gaels, beginning at 7:00 PM.
