Bronx, N.Y. -
The Fordham softball squad helped itself in a couple of ways by shutting out Saint Louis, 4-0, on Saturday, April 14 from Bahoshy Field. The win gave the Rams a sweep of the Billikens, while improving their record to 11-1 in the Atlantic 10, and the victory kept Fordham's record at an unblemished 7-0 for games played at home this season.
For the second straight day, Saint Louis' Laura Bohning had Jen Mineau's number, as Bohning ripped a two out double off of the 190 foot sign on the wall in left field with two outs in the first. But Mineau struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Mineau ran into some trouble again in the third as Lindsay Friedman squared to bunt, but was hit by the pitch. She advanced to second when Gabby Luety's pickoff attempt went into right field for an error. With no outs and a runner in scoring position, Mineau bore down and struck out the side to get out of the jam.
Fordham scored all of its run in the bottom of the fifth as Luety led off with her team-leading twenty-sixth walk of the season and Cora Ianiro came in to run for her. Ianiro advanced to second on a groundout and moved to third on an infield hit by Lindsey Kay Bright. Bright stole second and Fordham had two runners in scoring position for Jamie LaBovick.
Up to this at bat, LaBovick was 0-for-2, but both outs were line drives that ended up in a Billikens' glove. This time, she connected on another line drive but this one wasn't caught, falling in for a single that scored Ianiro and Bright and gave the Rams a 2-0 lead. Nicole Callahan followed her with a base hit off the wall in right that allowed LaBovick to move to third. Erica Wills came in to run for Callahan and Wills got to second on the back end of a steal attempt by LaBovick, who was thrown out at home on the play. But Fordham then made it 4-0 when Paige Ortiz lifted her team-best 11th home run of the season over the wall in left.
Mineau retired the Billikens in the final two innings without a run and Fordham held on for the 4-0 shutout. Mineau tossed her 26th complete game and improved to 21-9 overall. She allowed just three hits, one walk and struck out 10. At the plate Bright had two of the Rams' six hits on the day.
Fordham improves to 27-17 overall and 11-1 in the A-10. The team returns to action on Tuesday, April 17, when they face Hofstra in nearby Hempstead, New York. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
