Big Innings by Rutgers Down Fordham

Piscataway, N.J. - Rutgers' Patrick Kivlehan and Steve Zavala each drove in three runs, as the Scarlet Knights snapped the Fordham Rams' three-game win streak by a 15-4 score at Bainton Field in Piscataway, New Jersey.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 14-19 overall, while Rutgers improves to 16-15.

Fordham opened the scoring in the first inning, as Tim Swatek reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matthew Cianci. Ryan Maghini then laced a single down the left field line, scoring Swatek.

Rutgers responded with an eight-run second inning to take a seven-run lead. Patrick Kivlehan led off the frame with a solo home run to left field, tying the game at one. The Scarlet Knights scored seven more times in the frame, highlighted by a two-run double by Matt Ackerman and a three-run double by Michael Zavala.

After Rutgers added another tally in the third on a passed ball, Fordham got back two runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run by Maghini, his team-leading fourth of the season, making it a 9-3 game.

Fordham cut the deficit to 9-4 in the top of the seventh, as the Rams loaded the bases on singles by Cianci and Ryan Lee and a walk to Mike Mauri. Stephen McSherry then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Cianci from third.

The Scarlet Knights though would rally for another big inning, scoring six times in the bottom of the seventh to round out the scoring.

Jonathan Reich (0-3) took the loss, allowing nine runs on 10 hits over five innings of work. Dan Sorine pitched two innings, giving up six runs on seven hits, while Ryan Fedak pitched a scoreless inning of work with one strikeout.

At the plate, Maghini led the way, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, while Cianci was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Lee also had a pair of hits in the game with McSherry having a hit and an RBI.

The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Wednesday, April 11th, when the Rams play their crosstown rival, Manhattan College, at Van Cortlandt Park, beginning at 3:30 PM.
