St. Bonaventure's Eddie Gray threw seven innings of two-hit ball with seven strikeouts, while Mike Grieco's three-run double highlighted a nine-run rally in the third inning, as the Bonnies took the opening game of a three-game series from Fordham, 12-0, at Fred Handler Park.
The loss moves Fordham to 9-17 on the year, 1-3 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure improved 10-9 overall, 2-2 in the league.
With the game scoreless entering the bottom of the third inning, St. Bonaventure sent 13 men to the plate, scoring nine runs on six hits and two errors to take control of the game. After two walks and a bunt single loaded the bases, Eric Jutca connected for a two-run double to right for the initial lead. The Bonnies later got a two-run single by Nick Brennen and a three-run double by Mike Grieco, which eventually increased the lead to 9-0.
The Bonnies tacked on one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth for the 12-0 edge.
The Rams could not get anything going against St. Bonaventure starter Eddie Gray, as Fordham managed only two hits in the game, a single by Ryan Maghini in the seventh and a single by Zach Small in the fifth.
Fordham struck out 11 times in the game, which included seven by Gray, three by Cam Carney, and one by Zac Edwards.
Fordham starter Daniel Munday (1-2) took the loss, as he gave up five earned runs on four hits and three walks in two-plus innings of work. John Porter went three innings of relief, allowing three unearned runs on four hits, while Dan Sorine gave up two runs on three walks and a hit batsman in a third of an inning. Jonathan Reich finished the game with 2.2 innings of one-hit relief.
Game two of this series will take place on Saturday afternoon with game time at 1:00 PM. The game time was moved due to the threat of rain.
