In the opening contest of the Seton Hall Strike Out Cancer Tournament, Seton Hall's Jon Prosinski threw a complete game five-hit shutout with five strikeouts, as the Pirates defeated the Fordham Rams, 5-0, at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N.J.
The loss drops the Rams to 5-12 on the season, while Seton Hall improved to 7-9.
The Pirates got on the board in the bottom of the second. Sal Annunziata opened the frame with a single to left, and was sacrificed to second. Annunziata then took third on a ball in the turf. Fordham catcher Ryan Phelan tried to catch Annunziata, but Brian Kownacki's swipe catch-and-tag, deflected off Kownacki's glove and head, and rolled away, allowing Annunziata to score. The blow to the head would force Kownacki out of the game.
In the third, Seton Hall increased the lead to 2-0, as Chris Selden reached on a bunt single, stole second, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch.
The Pirates then put three insurance runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double by Mike Genovese and a sacrifice fly by Will Walsh to lead, 5-0.
That cushion was all Seton Hall starting pitcher Jon Prosinski (3-2) would need. He held Fordham hitless until the fifth, when Tim Swatek ripped a one-out double to right, and only allowed one runner to reach third base.
That instance came in the sixth when Fordham had runners at first and third with two outs. Phelan reached base on a single to left, but was erased on Matthew Cinaci's fielder's choice. After a wild pitch put Cianci at second, Joseph Calabrese singled up the middle to put runners at the corners. The Rams however could not cash in, as Prosinski struck out Ryan Lee to end the threat.
Fordham mustered only two other hits, but both baserunners were erased on double plays in the seventh and ninth innings.
Fordham starter Daniel Munday (1-1) threw the first five innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits with one strikeout in the loss. Jonathan Reich threw two-hitless innings of relief, while Dan Sorine pitched a clean eighth inning with one strikeout.
At the plate, Calabrese was 2-for-3, recording his first two career hits, while Swatek was 1-for-3 with a double. Phelan and Ryan Maghini were also 1-for-3.
The Rams will be back in South Orange on Saturday, when the team takes on the Maine Black Bears at 10:00 AM.
