Final Stats
Clearwater, Fla. - Fordham closed out the final day of the Under Armour Showcase Tournament with a 4-3, ten-inning loss to Boston University on Tuesday from Clearwater, Florida. With the defeat, the Rams fell to 7-13 on the year.
The Rams had a scoring chance in the top of the first as Paige Ortiz worked a two-out walk. Brianna Turgeonfollowed with a double to center with Ortiz trying to score on the play but she was gunned down at the plate.
Fordham was robbed of a run in the top of the first, and the Rams returned the favor in the bottom of the frame as Turgeon made a beautiful, diving catch in center to rob Ekart of an extra base hit with a runner on first base.
In the second the Terriers loaded the bases without a hit as the first two batters were walked by Jen Mineau, and after a strikeout, Melanie Delgado was hit by a pitch. With the sacks full and one out, Mineau struck out Erica Casacci looking, but Jayme Mask singled to left to score Emily Roesch and give Boston University a 1-0 lead.
The Terriers stretched their lead to 2-0 when Ekart led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to left-center field.
The Rams entered the sixth trailing 2-0 and running out of chances. Nicole Callahan led off the inning with a base hit, Paige Ortiz followed with another and Turgeon walked and Fordham had the bases loaded with no outs. Two batters later, Gabby Luety got the Rams on the board with a sacrifice fly that scored Callahan. Michele Daubman then tied the game on a ball that was misplayed by Boston University first baseman Melanie Delgado. The error allowed Erica Willsto score the tying run.
The game would go into extra innings with BU having a chance to win it in the eighth. With Delgado placed on second, as per the international tiebreaking rule, Mineau uncorked a wild pitch that moved Delgado to third. But Mineau escaped harm by getting an infield pop-up and a strikeout to move the game to the ninth.
In the ninth, Kayla Lombardo was placed on second to open the frame. Daubman advanced her to third with a single, and Jessica Crowleyput Fordham ahead 3-2 with an RBI sacrifice fly to right that scored Lombardo.
The lead was short lived, however as Boston promptly tied the game in the bottom of the inning as O'Connor was placed on second and scored the tying run on a base hit to left by Ekart.
Fordham opened the tenth with Lindsey Kay Bright on second and she went to third on a sacrifice bunt from Jamie LaBovick but she was stranded there.
The Terriers won the game in their next at-bat. After Clendenny was placed on second, she came in to score on a base hit from Delgado to give Boston University the 4-3 victory.
In the night cap, the Rams fell to the Netherlands National team 9-2 in an exhibition match between the two teams immediately following the game with Boston University.
The softball team returns to action on Friday, March 16, as they compete in the JMU Days Inn Invitational from Harrisonburg, Virginia.
