FIU's R.J. Fondon threw seven innings of five-hit ball with six strikeouts, while Pablo Bermudez was 4-for-5 with three RBI, as the Panthers topped the Fordham Rams, 9-2, at FIU Baseball Stadium in Miami, Florida.
With the loss, Fordham is 5-10 on the year, while FIU improved to 7-6.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the second, as FIU loaded the bases with two outs. Julius Gaines came up with an RBI-single to score Mike Martinez, while Roche Woodard drew a walk to force in a second run.
FIU extended the lead to 3-1 in the fourth on an RBI-single by T.J. Shantz, before Fordham scored in the top of the fifth to pull back within two. Brendan Maghini connected for a two-out single, followed by a single by Stephen McSherry. McSherry's single went to center, where the centerfielder over shot the play at third on a throwing error, allowing Maghini to score.
The Panthers came right back to score twice in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run double by Aramis Garcia, and twice in the sixth on a two-run single by Bermudez to lead by a 7-1 score.
After two more runs in the seventh by FIU, Fordham scored the final run of the game in the eighth. With two outs, Matthew Cianci singled, followed by a single by Brian Kownacki. A wild pitch advanced both runners with Cianci scoring on an error.
Joseph Charest (0-4) had a rough start for the Rams, allowing five runs on seven hits with six walks in four-plus innings of work. At the plate, Kownacki was 2-for-4 with a stolen base, while Ryan Maghini was also 2-for-4.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Tuesday, March 13th, when the Rams finish their southern swing at Florida Atlantic, beginning at 6:00 PM.
