A week ago against Massachusetts, the Fordham women's basketball squad did its best Sisyphus impression in a two-point win over the Minutewomen. On Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia, Fordham channeled David as the Rams tried to slay Goliath, but Temple proved to be too much for the Philistine as the Owls defeated the Rams, 69-51, in an Atlantic 10 game in McGonigle Hall. Fordham is now 11-13 overall and 2-7 in the Atlantic 10.
Fordham showed no fear early in the game as the Rams connected on four of their first five shots over the first 4:21 of play to take a 9-4 lead. Abigail Corning scored five points during that stretch.
Fordham got the lead to as much as six when Corning buried another three-pointer at 13:38 and maintained the lead until a jumper by Victoria Macauley gave the Owls their first advantage of the game, 15-14, at 12:31.
The Rams regained the lead over a minute later on a Taryn Durant layup, but Temple responded with a Brittany Lewis jumper at 11:21 for a 17-16 lead.
The game would be tied twice over the next four minutes until Temple took the lead for good at the 7:59 mark and the Owls closed out the first half with a 13-4 run to take a 36-27 advantage into the intermission.
Temple put the game away early in the second half, opening the period with an 8-0 run over the first 4:04. The Fordham scoring drought was broken by an Arielle Collins layup at 15:57 that made the score 44-29 for the Owls.
Temple pushed the lead to 22 points at two different occasions in the second half before the Rams chipped away both times to get the deficit back under 20 points. Fordham got as close at 17 points on five different occasions in the second half, but could get no closer as Temple went on to win 69-51.
Despite the 18-point loss, there were several standout performances for Fordham. Collins and Corning each scored 15 points to lead the Rams. Collins also collected four steals and Corning shot 6-of-7 from the field. Emily Tapio came off the bench to score eight points, making 3-of-5 shots.
The women's basketball team will take a week off before returning to the Rose Hill Gym to host fellow Jesuit school, Xavier University, on February 11 at 5:00 PM. The contest with the Musketeers is the second half of a doubleheader with the men's team.
Notes: Rams have yet to allow 70 points this season but Temple was the third team to come within a basket of 70 points (Rutgers (December 8) and La Salle (January 11) each scored 68 points)...The Rams surrendered 70 points three times in 2010-11...Christina Gaskin blocked three shots, the second most for her in a game this season (Navy, December 29)...Emily Tapio is shooting .547 (29-53) from the field this season.
