Men's Swimming Fall to Minutemen

Amherst, Mass. - The Fordham University women's swimming squad left more than waves in the University of Massachusetts' Joseph R. Rogers Pool today. The Rams also left their mark in the Rogers Pool record book, setting four pool marks in a 171-129 win over the Massachusetts women. On the men's side, the Rams fell to the Minutemen, 170-123.

Brienne Ryan led the way for the Fordham women, setting individual pool records in the 50 and 100 freestyle while Courtney Collyer set the 200 butterfly pool mark and the two teamed up with Kellie Lyver and Kelly Bunster to set the UMass pool record in the 200 free relay.

Ryan won both the 50 and 100 freestyle events, taking first in the 50 in a time of 23.82, matching her season-best time and bettering the pool record of 24.00 set by Boston College's Liz Byron in 2005.

Ryan took first in the 100 freestyle in a season-best time of 51.31, surpassing the previous pool mark of 52.18 set by Central Connecticut's Jaime Crowley in 2005.

Collyer took first in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:03.83, finishing over seven seconds ahead of teammate Shannon Jones, who placed second. Collyer's time surpassed the previous pool record of 2:05.26 set by Erin McDonough of Syracuse in 2000.

Ryan and Collyer were also members of the winning 200 freestyle relay, along with Lyver and Bunster, hitting the touchpad in a season-best time of 1:36.68, almost two seconds ahead of the runners-up and 1.49 seconds better that the pool record of 1:38.17 set by UMass in 1999.

Collyer also won the 500 free in a time of 5:03.23, just over a second ahead of teammate Kara Field, who placed second in 5:04.38.

Other events winners for the Fordham women included Field, who won the 1000 free in a time of 10:27.95, almost 18 seconds ahead of Massachusetts' Chelsea Downing, while also placing second in the 200 IM in a time of 2:11.83.

Ariana Peschke won the 100 back in a time of 59.99, edging out UMass' Hannah Markey by 0.13 seconds, Spencer Chappell won the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:08.01, just beating Hannah Markey to the wall, and Bunster took first in the 100 butterfly in 58.84, beating Jones, who placed second in 59.13, to the finish.

In relays, the 200 medley relay of Ryan, Collyer, Bunster and Alana Biagioli took first in a time of 1:47.96, over three seconds ahead of second place UMass

Alexandra Wessel placed second in the 200 free (1:54.25), Libby Dorger was second in one meter diving (224.17) and Andrea Krok was second on the three meter board with a score of 223.27.

For the Fordham men, Devon Morris won two events, taking the 50 free in a time of 21.10, just 0.10 seconds ahead of Peter Sacco of UMass, and the 100 free in a time of 46.53, over a second in front of UMass' Erik Rennspiess.

Shintaro Noguchi was also a winner for the Rams, placing first in the 100 butterfly in a time of 50.96 while also placing second in the 200 free 1:43.21.

Andrew Hendrickson finished second in the 500 free (4:49.87) and third in the 1000 free in a season-best time of 9:53.49, while Brandon Strong was second in the 200 fly in 1:55.91, Thomas Yi second placed second in the 200 backstroke (1:53.17) and third in the 100 back (52.15) and Kevin Wong was third on the one (203.24) and three (169.65) meter boards.

In men's relays, the 200 freestyle relay team of Noguchi, Patrick Militti, Morris, and Patrick Mulligan won the event in a time of 1:24.43, just 0.53 seconds ahead of UMass, while the 200 medley relay of Yi, McManus, Noguchi and Morris placed second in 1:36.19.

The Fordham men's and women's swimming squads will next be in action on Wednesday night, February 8th, as they host St. Francis College in the Col. Frances B. Messmore Aquatics Center at 6:00 PM.
