Baseball Splits Twinbill with Campbell

Buies Creek, N.C. - The poor weather from Friday subsided for Saturday's baseball doubleheader between Fordham and Campbell at Taylor Field in Buies Creek, North Carolina. The two teams ended up splitting the doubleheader, as Fordham took the opener, 7-6, while Campbell took the nightcap, 5-2.

With the split, Fordham is 1-4 on the year, while Campbell moved to 4-2.

In the opening game of the doubleheader, Fordham's Mike Mauri had the go-ahead two-run single in the top of the eighth, as the Rams posted their first win of the season, 7-6, over Campbell.

Campbell opened the scoring in the third, picking up an unearned run on a hit by pitch, an error, and a sacrifice fly.

Fordham responded immediately with two runs in the fourth for a 2-1 lead. Mauri opened the frame with a walk and stole second. Stephen McSherry then ripped a double to right, scoring Mauri. A base hit by Ryan Phelan moved McSherry to third with Lee plating McSherry with a sacrifice fly.

The Rams expanded the lead to 3-1 in the seventh. Brian Kownacki reached on an error to begin the inning and then stole second. After a walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases, Kownacki scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Maghini.

Campbell grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the frame, scoring four times for a 5-3 edge, highlighted by a two-run double by David Olson and an RBI-single by Kyle Holmstrom.

The Rams came right back with four runs of their own in the top of the eighth, as pinch-hitter Brendan Maghini doubled to right field with one out, and moved to third on a Lee single. Following a pitching change, Lee stole second to put runners at second and third. Kownacki followed with a two-run single, scoring Maghini and Lee to tie the game. Kownacki then stole second and later advanced to third on a wild pitch.

After two walks to David Judisky and Ryan Maghini loaded the bases, Mauri connected for a two-run single to give Fordham a 7-5 lead.

Campbell got a run back in the bottom of the frame, but could not muster another tally against Rich Anastasi, as he recorded his first win of the season in relief. Anastasi (1-0) pitched 2.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts. He pitched in relief of Chris Pike, who had a solid outing, giving up four earned runs with four strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched.

At the plate, McSherry was 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI, while Kownacki was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBI, and two stolen bases. Lee also had two hits in the opener while adding a stolen base.

In game two, Campbell's Kyle Holmstrom had a home run and three RBI to lead the Cames to a 5-2 victory over the Rams.

Fordham opened the scoring in the third, as Rob McCunney singled through the left side with one out, and scored on a triple to right center by Lee.

Campbell knotted the game at one in the fifth, as Holmstrom connected for a solo home run.

The Camels then took a 2-1 lead in the seventh, as the Rams' committed an error on a dropped third strike that would have ended the inning, but allowed Erick Gaylord to score from second.

Campbell extended the lead to 5-1, tacking on three runs in the eighth, highlight by a two-run double by Holstrom and an RBI-single by Blake Boyce.

The Rams tried to find some ninth inning magic, as Ryan Maghini singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a double by Zach Small, to cut the deficit to 5-2, but Campbell's Ryan Mattes got pinch-hitter Brendan Maghini on a strikeout to end the game.

For Fordham, Joseph Charest (0-2) was the hard luck loser, allowing only one earned run over a career-high seven innings of work. He also tied a career-high with four strikeouts. At the plate, Ryan Maghini and McCunney each had a pair of base hits.

The Rams and Camels will have the rubber match of the series on Sunday at 1:00 PM, as a make-up from Friday's rain out.
