Cathedral City, Calif. -
Despite a complete game, eight strikeout performance from Jen Mineau in the second day of competition at the Cathedral City Classic in Cathedral City, California, the Rams were bested by the Golden Bears, 5-0.
Mineau got off to a quick start after Jamia Reid led off the game with a single as Mineau struck out the next two batters and got Breana Kostraba to fly out and strand two runners on base in the first.
The Rams went in order in bottom of the first and Cal got on the board in the second. After retiring the first two batter in the inning, Mineau surrendered a free pass to Jolene Henderson, who moved to second on a Frani Echavarria single and scored on a single from Reid.
Fordham had its first base runner in the third. Brianna Turgeon led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a ground out from Jessica Crowley, but she was stranded there.
Cal extended its lead in the fourth. Mineau walked the leadoff batter, Cheyenne Cordes, and Danielle Henderson made her pay with a two run home run that made the score 3-0 for the Golden Bears at the halfway point of the game.
The Golden Bears nearly scored again in the fifth after a pair of one-out walks put a runner in scoring position, but Fordham was able to escape as Mineau induced Kostreba to hit into a double play and the Rams escaped unscathed.
In the bottom of the frame, Turgeon reached on an error with two outs. Crowley then ripped a single through the right side, and the Rams had two on and two outs for pinch hitter, Jo Krasnisky. Krasnisky ripped a grounder in the infield, but Turgeon was called out on the play for interfering with the shortstop and the Fordham rally was over.
Cal added a run in the sixth and seventh for the 5-0 win.
The Rams will complete play at the Cathedral City Classic on Saturday, February 24, when they face Arizona and Fullerton.
